In the early stages of Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral development, the child only cares about those events that may affect him. The child does not think that if what he is doing is wrong or good, he simply focuses on how this could harm him or not. It tends to be a stage full of self-centeredness.

The child at this stage does not act in a certain way because he wants to, but he is not aware that what he can do or could not affect other people. While it is true that it is self-centered it is not consciously. To understand the child at this stage it is important to listen to him since knowing his perception will allow for adequate instruction and that he can easily move on to the next stage.
