As part of a science experiment, Jose did a test for starch on a slice of apple and a slice of potato. The yellow-orange iodine
juin [17]

Answer:

See explanation

Explanation:

Iodine solution is used to test for starch. A positive test for starch gives a blue-black color.

The fact that the color of the apple remained the same is indicative of the fact that starch was not contained in the apple.

A change in the color of potato indicates the presence of starch in the potato.

The fact that iodine did not react with apple should not be taken to mean that apples contain no starch at all. Starch changes gradually to sugar as fruits ripen. This is why the apple gave a negative test for starch.

What is the minimum mass of sodium hydroxide required to neutralize a solution that was prepared by dissolving 9.16 g of hydroch
wariber [46]

Answer:

10.04 g of NaOH is required for neutralization

Explanation:

neutralization reaction:

NaOH+HCl\rightarrow NaCl+H_{2}O

Molar mass of NaOH = 40 g/mol

Molar mass of HCl = 36.5 g/mol

So, 9.16 g of HCl = \frac{9.16}{36.5} moles of HCl = 0.251 moles of HCl

According to neutralization reaction, 1 mol of NaOH is required to neutralize 1 mol of HCl

So, 0.251 moles of NaOH are required to neutralize 0.251 moles of HCl

So mass of NaOH required for neutralization = (0.251\times 40) g = 10.04 g

a 75g sample of liquid water at 10^C ends up as ice at -10^C. how much energy is involved in this change
anastassius [24]

The total heat that is involved in this change is 23632.5 J.

What is the energy involved?

We know that energy is involved as matter is changing from one state to another and in this case what we have is a 75g sample of liquid water at 10°C ends up as ice at -10°C.

There are are about three steps of the change in the energy;

1) Heat required until the water would change to ice

2) Latent heat of fusion of ice

3) Heat required until the temperature drops to -10°C

Thus;

1) H = mcdT

m = mass of the water

c = specific heat capacity of water

dT = temperature change

H = 75 * 4.18 * (0 - 10)

H = -3135 J

2) Heat of fusion =

H = mL

m = mass of ice

L = latent heat of fusion of ice

336 J g^-1 * 75g

= 25200 J

3) Heat required to decrease the temperature futher

H = 75 * 2.09 * (0 - (-10))

H = 1567.5J

Total heat required = 25200 J + 1567.5J -3135 J

= 23632.5 J
