The air outside is so warm that this snowman is melting. During melting, the water molecules (gain/lose) thermal energy . How does the motion of the molecules change during melting

When a solid melts, heat is required to break apart the bonds of the tightly packed molecules.  As energy is added to the solid, the motion of the molecules speed and are able to move around more freely.
