The sum of john's weight and sally's weight is 20 pounds more than four times the difference between their two weights (john is

heavier). Twice sally's weight is 40 pounds more than john's weight. Write down the two facts in two linear equations. Simplify the first equation and solve the two equations to find weights of john and sally

The weight of John is 160 pounds and weight of Sally is 100 pounds.

Explanation

Suppose, the weight of John is x pounds and the weight of Sally is y pound.

Given that, the sum of their weight is 20 pounds more than four times the difference between their weights. So, the first equation will be....

x+y=4(x-y)+20 ...................................(1)

Also given that, twice sally's weight is 40 pounds more than john's weight. So, the second equation will be.....

2y=x+40...............................(2)

Simplifying equation (1) we will get....

x+y=4x-4y+20\\ \\ 3x-5y=-20 ...................................(3)

Solving equation (2) for x itself......

x= 2y-40

Now substituting this x= 2y-40 into equation (3) in place of x, we will get.....

3(2y-40)-5y=-20\\ \\ 6y-120-5y=-20\\ \\ y=-20+120\\ \\ y=100

Plugging y=100 into x= 2y-40 .....

x=2(100)-40=200-40=160

So, the weight of John is 160 pounds and weight of Sally is 100 pounds.

⦁ Use both methods to find the distance between the points on the number line.
Vitek1552 [10]

Answer:

4 and 4

Step-by-step explanation:

Method A

1) Method A: Let 2 be the starting point and -2, the finishing one. Counting between 2 and -2, we can count a distance of 4 units. That's the simplest way, but not convenient to great numbers on the Number Line.

Method B:

There is no such thing as a negative distance, as a physical quantity. So this is the reason why we need to compute the absolute value of two numbers, which is simply what was done on Method B.

|2-(-2)|=|4|=4

As we are dealing with absolute values, the order is not relevant after all, the result remains the same. Take a look:

|-2-2|=|-4|=4

That's why the greater (2) or the lesser number (-2) can be the subtrahend (in bold within the brackets.

12345 [234]

Samuel was going with 40 km/h and Heather was going with 37 km/h

Step-by-step explanation:

Starting at the same point at the same time, Samuel and Heather rode their bikes in the same direction

 • Samuel traveled 3 km/h faster than Heather
 • After 3.5 h Samuel stopped for a half-hour break, but Heather kept going
 • Heather was 8 km ahead of Samuel

We need to find how fast each was going

Assume that Heather's speed is x km/h

∵ Heather's speed = x km/h

∵ Samuel traveled 3 km/h faster than Heather

∴ Samuel's speed = x + 3 km/h

The formula of the distance is distance = speed × time

∵ Samuel travel for 3.5 hours

- Find the distance that Samuel traveled in 3.5 h

∴ Samuel distance = (x + 3) × 3.5

- Multiply the bracket by 3.5 to simplify

∴ Samuel distance = 3.5x + 10.5

∵ Samuel took a break for half hour

∵ Heather kept going

∵ At the end of the break, Heather was 8 km ahead of Samuel

- That means Heather was going for 4 hours (3.5 + 0.5), and her

distance is longer than Samuel distance by 8 km

∴ Heather distance = x × 4 = 4x

- Subtract the distance of Samuel from the distance of Heather

and equate the difference by 8

∵ 4x - (3x + 10.5) = 8

∴ 4x - 3x - 10.5 = 8

- Add the like terms in the left hand side

∴ 0.5x - 10.5 = 8

- Add 10.5 to both sides

∴ 0.5x = 18.5

- Divide both sides by 0.5

∴ x = 37

∵ x represents Heather's speed

∴ Heather's speed = 37 km/h

∵ x + 3 represents Samuel's speed

∴ Samuel's speed = 37 + 3 = 40 km/h

Samuel was going with 40 km/h and Heather was going with 37 km/h

4. Entomologists introduce 20 of one
Lina20 [59]

Answer:

This number can be found using the Rule of 70, which describes the formula dt = 70 / r, where dt is the doubling time, and r is the annual rate of growth.

Step-by-step explanation:

24/6 = 4

20 x 2 = 40 x 2 = 80 x 2 = 160 x 2 = 320

20 ---> 320 in the first day.

Keep doing this equation. Multiply each day's end result by 2 four times for 9 more days.

Solve the equation. Check for extraneous solutions. 9|9 – 8x| = 2x + 3
Bad White [126]
The answers of this equation are 39/37 and 6/5. To get the answers, the equation of the problem becomes 9(9-8x)=2x+3 and 9(8x-9)=2x+3. Then next step is to simplify first equation 1,

After, equation 2 is simplified
