This can be tested through a blood panel that also test for blood sugar and protein aside from calcium. Moreover, low level of calcium indicates secondary hyperparathyroidism where the parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone, which causes calcium levels to rise that result to bone thinning and fractures.<span>                  </span>
