Perform the following calculations and express your answer using the correct number of significant digits. (a) A woman has two b

ags weighing 13.5 lb and one bag with a weight of 10.2 lb. What is the total weight of the bags? (b) The force F on an object is equal to its mass m multiplied by its acceleration a. If a wagon with mass 55 kg accelerates at a rate of 0.0255 m/s2, what is the force on the wagon? Answer:

a) 23.7 lb

b) 1.4 N

Explanation:

Part a)

Weight of 1st bag = 13.5 lbs

Weight of 2nd bag = 10.2 lbs

We need to find the total weight of bag keeping in mind the number of significant digits. The total weight will be the sum of two individual weights.

So,

Total weight of bags = 13.5 + 10.2 lbs = 23.7 lbs

In addition and subtraction, we have to look for the least value of decimal places in given numbers i.e. the numbers being added or subtracted. The final answer must have these much decimal places in order to be expressed in significant digits.

The least number of decimal digits in given numbers is 1. In our answer, there is also only 1 decimal digit. So, our answer is already expressed in significant digits. If there would have been more than 1 decimal digits in the final answer, we would have to round it to 1 decimal digit.

So, the answer to this question is 23.7 lbs.

Part b)

Mass of wagon = m = 55 kg

Acceleration = a = 0.0255 m/s²

Force is defined as the product of mass and acceleration. i.e.

F = ma

Using the given values, we get:

F = 55(0.0255) = 1.4025 N

In multiplication and division, in order to express the final answer in significant digits, the number of significant digits must be equal to the least number of significant digits of the given numbers(which are being multiplied or divided)

55 has 2 significant digits.

0.0255 has 3 significant digits. Remember that the 0,s on the right will not be considered significant here.

This means, the final answer can have only 2 significant digits. Rounding the answer to 2 significant digits, we get:

Force = F = 1.4 N

A flat coil of wire consisting of 20 turns, each with an area of 50 cm2, is positioned perpendicularly to a uniform magnetic fie
jenyasd209 [6]

Answer:

0.5 A

Explanation:

N = 20, A = 50 cm^2 = 50 x 10^-4 m^2, dB = 6 - 2 = 4 T, dt = 2 s, R = 0.4 ohm

The induced emf is given by

e = - N dФ/dt

Where, dФ/dt is the rate of change of magnetic flux.

Ф = B A

dФ/dt = A dB/dt

so,

e = 20 x 50 x 10^-4 x 4 / 2 = 0.2 V

negative sign shows the direction of magnetic field.

induced current, i = induced emf / resistance = 0.2 / 0.4 = 0.5 A

The density of a material is constant and it is given by the ratio of the mass to the volume of the material

The mass of the liquid and the full bottle ae

The mass of the liquid is <u>450 g</u>

The mass of the filled bottle is <u>530 grams</u>

<u></u>

The reason the above values are correct are as follows:

The given parameters are;

Volume of the bottle, V = Half litre

Mass of the bottle, m_b = 80 g

The volume of liquid in the bottle when filled, V = 500 cm³

The density of the olive oil with which the bottle is filled, ρ = 0.9 g/cm³

a. Required:

To calculate the mass of oil in the bottle

Solution:

The volume of oil in the bottle when the bottle is filled, V = 500 cm³

Density, \ \rho = \dfrac{Mass}{Volume}  = \dfrac{m}{V}

The mass of the liquid, m = ρ × V

∴ m = 0.9 g/cm³ × 500 cm³ = 450 g

The mass of the liquid, m = <u>450 g</u>

<u></u>

b. The mass of the oil in the bottle, m = grams

The mass of the full bottle, m_{filled} = m + m_b

∴ m_{filled} = 450 g + 80 g = 530 g

The mass of the full bottle, m_{filled} = <u>530 grams</u>

In an electricity experiment, a 1.10 g plastic ball is suspended on a 56.0 cm long string and given an electric charge. A charge
Shalnov [3]

Answer:

Tension, T = 0.0115 N

Explanation:

Given that,

Mass of the plastic ball, m = 1.1 g

Length of the string, l = 56 cm

A charged rod brought near the ball exerts a horizontal electrical force F on it, causing the ball to swing out to a 21.0 degree angle and remain there. According to attached figure :

T\cos\theta=mg

T is tension in the string

T=\dfrac{mg}{\cos\theta}\\\\T=\dfrac{1.1\times 10^{-3}\times 9.8}{\cos(21)}\\\\T=0.0115\ N

So, the tension in the string is 0.0115 N.
