Well, let's take this question by each sentence

Gia's bus route from home to school = 5\frac{1}{2} miles

Gia's bus route from school to home is 1\frac{3}{5} times as long

here 'as long' means the route from home to school mentioned earlier

that is 5\frac{1}{2}

so 1\frac{3}{5} times as long means

1\frac{3}{5} times 5\frac{1}{2}

=1\frac{3}{5} X 5\frac{1}{2}

It is easier to multiply when we have our fractions in the proper form

=\frac{(1X5) +3}{5} X  \frac{(5X2)+1}{2}

=\frac{8}{5}  X \frac{11}{2}

=\frac{8X11}{5X2}

=\frac{88}{10}

lets simplify this fraction to the mixed form

= \frac{80}{10}  + \frac{8}{10}

This simplifies to

8+ \frac{4}{5}

or 8 \frac{4}{5}

Hence Gia's route from school to home is 8 \frac{4}{5} miles
