When changing states, only the intermolecular forces are considered, which, in water's case are hydrogen bonds. In order to go from solid to liquid to gas, the hydrogen bonds between the water molecules must be weakened to a certain degree that allows the molecules to spread further apart in liquids, and must be broken altogether to separate the molecules in order to turn it into gas.
Therefore, the answer is d.

The reason it is not the covalent bonds within molecules (despite the fact that it will turn water into a gas, it’s not water vapour, but hydrogen and oxygen gas) is that when bonds within a molecule are broken, this is called decomposition and it is a CHEMICAL change. Changing states is only a PHYSICAL change.
It is not ionic because water has covalent bonds.
Hydrogen bonds can only occur BETWEEN molecules (intermolecular forces).
Covalent bonds can only occur WITHIN molecules (intramolecular).

Molodets [167]

Answer:

Identify each equation as a composition reaction, a decomposition reaction, or neither.

Fe2O3 + 3 SO3 → Fe2(SO4)3

NaCl + AgNO3 → AgCl + NaNO3

(NH4)2Cr2O7 → Cr2O3 + 4 H2O + N2

Solution

In this equation, two substances combine to make a single substance. This is a composition reaction.

Two different substances react to make two new substances. This does not fit the definition of either a composition reaction or a decomposition reaction, so it is neither. In fact, you may recognize this as a double-replacement reaction.

A single substance reacts to make multiple substances. This is a decomposition reaction.

Test Yourself

Identify the equation as a composition reaction, a decomposition reaction, or neither.

C3H8 → C3H4 + 2 H2

1. Find its coordination figure/coordination number of central atom (CF)

Ev = Vallence electron of central atom

Σe = electrons donated from substituents

Terminal O gives 0 electrons, hence Σe = 3 x 0

charge = charge of the compound

2. Find EP (electron pairs) and LP (lone pairs)

LP = CF - EP

3. Draw the skeleton with octet substituents (top right figure)

4. Find formal charge for each atoms (Qf)

5. Write formal charge near atom in skeleton
