The sodium produces the cation ions (Na+) while the chlorine produces the anions (Cl-). Generally, ionic compound has a strong bond.

Stirring sodium chloride in water, Alice is most likely to demonstrate the ability of ionic compound to dissolve in water.  Ionic compounds dissolves in polar solvent like water. The opposite charge present in the ionic compound are usually dissociated when they are immersed in water. The cations of sodium are surrounded by the negatively charged oxygen ion while the anions of chlorine are surrounded by the positively charged hydrogen ion.  The water molecules surround the ions available in the ionic compound thereby preventing it from recombining. All of the water molecules surround the ions of the ionic compound to dissolve it.
