When a gas is rapidly compressed (say, by pushing down a piston) its temperature increases. When a gas expands against a piston,

it cools. Explain these changes in temperature using the kinetic theory, in particular noting what happens to the momentum of molecules when they strike the moving piston.

Answer:

Explained in explanation

Explanation:

The first law of thermodynamics states that the change in internal energy of a system(ΔU) is equal to the sum of the net heat transfer into the system(Q) and the net work done on the system(W). In equation, this law is;

ΔU = Q + W

Now, when there's gas inside a container with a movable piston that's tightly fitting, we will assume that the piston can move up and down thereby compressing the gas or allowing the gas to expand against it.

Now these gas molecules inside the container possess kinetic energy. Thus, the internal energy(U) of the system is simply the sum of all the kinetic energies of the individual gas molecules present in the container.

Therefore, if the temperature(T) of the gas increases, then the speed and internal energy(U) of the gas molecules will also increase. In the same way, if the temperature of the gas decreases, the speed and internal energy of the gas molecules would also decrease.

Now, back to the question, when the piston is pushed down, it does work on the gas and the gas does negative work on the piston. Thus, the gas will be get compressed to a smaller space, and thereby making the gas molecules to hit the piston at a faster rate. Thus, there is a decrease in speed and as we saw earlier that when there is a decrease in speed, it means temperature has decreased.

Whereas, when the piston is moved up, the gas does positive work on the piston and the speed of the gas molecules will increase. Like I said earlier that increase in speed means increase in temperature.

Why does a dropped object only fall 5 meters down after 1 second of freefall, yet achieve a speed of 10m/s?
andrew11 [14]

A dropped object only fall 5 meters down after 1 second of freefall, yet achieve a speed of 10m/s due to acceleration due to gravity.

s = vt - 1 / 2 at²

s = Displacement

v = Final velocity

t = Time

a = Acceleration

s = 5 m

t = 1 s

a = 10 m / s²

5 = ( v * 1 ) - ( 1 / 2 * 10 * 1 * 1 )

5 = v - 5

v = 10 m / s

The equation used to solve the given problem is an equation of motion. In a free fall motion, usually air resistance is not considered for easier calculation. If air resistance is considered acceleration cannot be constant throughout the entire motion.

Therefore, a dropped object only fall 5 meters down after 1 second of freefall, yet achieve a speed of 10m/s due to acceleration due to gravity.

You have family members and the relationship you observed in childhood affects the quality of your current relationships?
Ghella [55]

Answer:

Yes, the relationships you observe in childhood affects the quality of your current relationships.

Explanation:

The saying,<em> "Children see, children do,"</em> is evidently true. A child's lifestyle and future relationships are greatly affected by the kind of relationships you allow him to see. Thus, it is very important that parents become role models for their kids.

For example, when your parents handle stress by shouting at each other, then most likely you'd also handle stress the same way in the future. So,<em> it is essential that the role models will show the child how to handle stress positively.</em> The experiences that children have at a young age affects their adult life.<u> It influences them and shapes them into who they will become.</u>

If people at home show positive relationships with each other and also supports a child regarding his education, then the child will most likely set positive relationships with his peers and achieve higher degree standards.

Thus, this explains the answer.

An electric fan is turned off, and its angular velocity decreases uniformly from 500 rev/min to 200 rev/min in 4.00 s.
Veseljchak [2.6K]

Answer:

a) -1.25 rev/s² and 23.3 rev

b)  2.67s

Explanation:

a) ωФ_o_z = (500 rev/min)(1min/ 60s) => 8.333 rev/s

ωФ_Z= (200 rev/min)(1min/ 60s) => 3.333rev/s

time 't'= 4 s

angular acceleration 'αФ_Z'=?

constant angular acceleration equation is given by,

ωФ_Z= ωФ_o_z + αФ_Zt

αФ_Z= (ωФ_Z - ωФ_o_z )/t => (3.333-8.333)/4

αФ_Z= -1.25 rev/s²

θ-θФ_o = ωФ_o_z t + 1/2αФ_Zt²

      =(8.333)(4) + 1/2 (-1.25)(4)²

      =23.3 rev

b) ωФ_Z=0   (comes to rest)

ωФ_o_z = 3.333 rev/s

αФ_Z= -1.25 rev/s²

ωФ_Z= ωФ_o_z + αФ_Zt

t= (ωФ_Z - ωФ_o_z)/αФ_Z => (0- 3.333)/-1.25

t= 2.67s

What equation describes conservation of charge?
Phantasy [73]

Answer:

The equation which describes conservation of charge is Q_{initial} - Q_{final } = 0

Explanation:

The law of conservation charge states that for an isolated system that sum of initial charges is equal to sum of final charges, that is the total charge is conserved.

let the sum of initial charges = Q_{initial}

let the sum of the final charges = Q_{final}

Q_{initial } = Q_{final}\\\\Q_{initial } - Q_{final} = 0

Therefore, the equation which describes conservation of charge is Q_{initial} - Q_{final } = 0
