In the extraction of salicylic acid from water using dichloroethane, a student begins with 2.0 g of the salicylic acid dissolved

in 100 ml of water. After extraction with 20 ml of dichloroethane, drying and evaporation of the organic layer afforded 1.0 g of salicylic acid. Assuming the student was efficient and did not lose any material, what is the partition coefficient (K) for the system ?

Answer:

K = 5

Explanation:

Partial coefficient is also known as distribution coefficient, which is the ratio of  concentration of a solute in two immiscible liquids.

For given system we write it as:

Kd = \frac{[salicylicacid]_{dichloromethane}}{[salicylicacid]_{water}}

After extraction the concentration of salicylic acid in dichloromethane is 1g /20 mL = 0.05

Initially the amount of salicyclic acid present was = 2 g

out of this one grams was being extracted by organic solvent

The amount of solute remained in aqueous phase = 1 g

so the concentration of salicyclic acid in water = 1/ 100 = 0.01

Kd = \frac{0.05}{0.01}=5

How much of a 400g sample remains after 4 years if a radioactive isotope has a half-life of 2 years?
timama [110]

Answer:

100 g

Explanation:

From the question given above, the following data were obtained:

Original amount (N₀) = 400 g

Time (t) = 4 years

Half-life (t½) = 2 years

Amount remaining (N) =?

Next, we shall determine the number of half-lives that has elapse. This can be obtained as follow:

Time (t) = 4 years

Half-life (t½) = 2 years

Number of half-lives (n) =?

n = t / t½

n = 4 / 2

n = 2

Thus, 2 half-lives has elapsed.

Finally, we shall determine the amount remaining of the radioactive isotope. This can be obtained as follow:

Original amount (N₀) = 400 g

Number of half-lives (n) = 2

Amount remaining (N) =?

N = 1/2ⁿ × N₀

N = 1/2² × 400

N = 1/4 × 400

N = 0.25 × 400

N = 100 g

Thus, the amount of the radioactive isotope remaing is the 100 g.

Gwar [14]

Answer:

4 1/2

Explanation:

Use a ratio to find your answer

 4          6

-----  =  -------

 3           x

Cross multiply to solve for x.

4x = 18

x = 18/4

x = 4 2/4  which is the same as 4 1/2
