What changes in color occur when bromine and kmno4 reacts with an alkene?

Chemistry

The correct answer for this question is that in both of the cases the color change is occuring in the reagent added (either Bromine or KMnO4), and not the alkene.

The addition reaction of bromine with an alkene results in the production of a vicinal dibromide. Bromine has a color of red liquid, when all of this substance is consumed in the solution, the red color disappears.

Meanwhile, the KMnO4 produces a vicinal diol with reaction of alkene. KMnO4 is purple in color, but is then reduced to MnO2. This chemical MnO2 does not have a strong purple color therefore resulting in a change in color.

Explain why you cannot just take away a proton to make a halogen negative.
Ilia_Sergeevich [38]

The force that holds protons and neutrons together is too strong to overcome.

Explanation

Consider the location of the particles in an atom.

 • Electrons are found outside the nucleus.
 • Protons and neutrons are found within the nucleus.

Protons carry positive charges and repel each other. The nucleus will break apart without the strong force that holds the protons and neutrons together. This force is much stronger than the attraction between the nucleus and the electrons. X-rays are energetic enough for removing electrons from an atom. However, you'll need a collider to remove protons from a stable nucleus. You could well have ionized the atom with all that energy.

Also, changing the number of protons per nucleus will convert the halogen atom to an atom of a different element. Rather than making the halogen negative, removing a proton will convert the halogen atom to the negative ion of a different element.

Explain why it is important that there be no gaps around the edges of the filter paper during a vacuum filtration
lesantik [10]

Vacuum filtration is more efficient and faster than filtration by the gravity method. But the set up of the vacuum filtration must be precise. Vacuum filtration is done under very reduced pressure hence there should be no gaps around the edges of the filter paper. For a vacuum to be effective there must be no hole or gap in the equipment. Under vacuum conditions air is removed and the pressure is lowered. If there is gap then air would be continuously supplied and it would be difficult to remove air completely.
