It very important and a good idea for all boaters to review the departure check lists in order to have a safe trip. In fact that is the most important thing to check before embarking on any trip. Boaters should ensure that everything is intact before leaving the dock to prevent unpleasant situations.

Pre-departure checklist is made up of different things that a boater should pay utmost attention to before leaving the dock such as weather, boat condition and equipment.

PRE-DEPARTURE CHECKLISTS

Weather

  • It is important to check weather forecast for the area and also the time frame during which individual will be boating.
  • Boat condition
  • Ensure hull is in good condition, check it for any damages.
  • Ensue the lights are working properly by checking all electrical system.  
  • Ensure you check the propulsion and cooling system
  • Oil level must be checked and inspect the engine compartments for any oil leaks.
  • Oil filters, water filters and spark plugs must also be changed if needed to.
  • Check the tank and ensure that is not leaking fuel.

Equipment

  • Ensure you have the required number of life jackets and confirm if they are the proper sizes for individual on board.
  • Ensure you have a first-aid kits and necessary tools.
