Ms. Berg's English class has too many students in it. If the class were split exactly in half to form 2 new classes, each class

would have no more than 18 students in it. If s = the number of students in Ms. Berg's English class, which mathematical sentence expresses the information above?

The actual answer is s/2 is less than or equal to 18 or for people who don’t know signs, s/2 ≤ 18 that’s the mathematical expression for the information above.

Suppose the length and width of the box in exercise 12 double. Does the surface area S double? Explain
Blizzard [7]
No, it does not.

In general, surface area is the sum of the areas of each face of a prism.  In a rectangular prism, we have length, width, and height.

The area of the bottom of the prism and the top of the prism is the same, and can be represented as l*w.  This means that together, it is 2lw.

The area of the left and right faces of the prism is the same, and can be represented as l*h.  This means that together, it is 2lh.

The area of the front and back faces of the prism is the same, and can be represented as w*h.  This means that together, it is 2wh.

This gives us the equation

SA = 2lw+2lh+2wh

If we double the length and width, making them each 2l, we then have:

SA = 2(2l*2w) + 2(2l*h) + 2(2w*h)
      = 2(4lw) + 4lh + 4wh
      = 8lw + 4lh + 4wh

If the surface area had been doubled, we would expect
4lw + 4lh + 4wh

No, it is not doubled.

4. find the real number roots. sqrt-0.25
e-lub [12.9K]

Given is square root of a negative real number, i.e. \sqrt{-0.25}

When we find square root of positive real numbers, we get Real answers.

But when we find square root of negative real numbers, we get Imaginary answers. To solve them, we can split the given negative number into product of -1 and the number itself but with positive sign. e.g. -4 = -1 x 4.

For square root of -1, we use english letter 'i' called Imaginary unit i.e. \sqrt{-1} = i

Now we can use -0.25 = -1 x 0.25

\sqrt{-0.25} =\sqrt{-1*0.25} \\\\ \sqrt{-0.25} =\sqrt{-1}*\sqrt{0.25} \\\\ \sqrt{-0.25} =i*0.5 \\\\ \sqrt{-0.25} =0.5i

Hence, "0.5i" is the final answer.
