A block-and-tackle pulley hoist is suspended in a warehouse by ropes of lengths 2 m and 3 m. the hoist weighs 430 n. the ropes,

fastened at different heights, make angles of 50° and 38° with the horizontal. find the tension in each rope and the magnitude of each tension. (let t2 and t3, represent the tension vectors corresponding to the ropes of length 2 m and 3 m respectively. round all numerical values to two decimal places.)

Refer to the diagram shown below.

For horizontal equilibrium,
T₃ cos38 = T₂ cos 50
0.788 T₃ = 0.6428 T₂
T₃ = 0.8157 T₂                (1)

For vertical equilibrium,
T₂ sin 50 + T₃ sin 38 = 430
0.766 T₂ + 0.6157 T₃ = 430
1.2441 T₂ + T₃ = 698.392        (2)

Substitute (1) into (2).
(1.2441 + 0.8157) T₂ = 698.392
T₂ = 339.058 N
T₃ = 0.8157(399.058) = 276.571 N

Answer:
T₂ = 339.06 N
T₃ = 276.57 N

A girl pushes a 1.04 kg book across a table with a horizontal applied force 10 points
mr Goodwill [35]

Answer:

Approximately 11.0\; \rm m \cdot s^{-1}. (Assuming that g = 9.81 \; \rm N \cdot kg^{-1}, and that the tabletop is level.)

Explanation:

Weight of the book:

W = m \cdot g = 1.04 \; \rm kg \times 9.81\; \rm N \cdot kg^{-1} \approx 10.202\; \rm N.

If the tabletop is level, the normal force on the book will be equal (in magnitude) to weight of the book. Hence, F(\text{normal force}) \approx 10.202\; \rm N.

As a side note, the F_N and W on this book are not equal- these two forces are equal in size but point in the opposite directions.

When the book is moving, the friction F(\text{kinetic friction}) on it will be equal to

  • \mu_{\rm k}, the coefficient of kinetic friction, times
  • F(\text{normal force}), the normal force that's acting on it.

That is:

\begin{aligned}& F(\text{kinetic friction}) \\ &= \mu_{\rm k}\cdot F(\text{normal force})\\ &\approx 0.35 \times 10.202\; \rm N \approx 3.5708\; \rm N\end{aligned}.

Friction acts in the opposite direction of the object's motion. The friction here should act in the opposite direction of that 15.0\; \rm N applied force. The net force on the book shall be:

\begin{aligned}& F(\text{net force})  \\ &= 15.0 \; \rm N - F(\text{kinetic friction}) \\& \approx 15.0 - 3.5708\; \rm N \approx 11.429\; \rm N\end{aligned}.

Apply Newton's Second Law to find the acceleration of this book:

\displaystyle a = \frac{F(\text{net force})}{m} \approx \frac{11.429\; \rm N}{1.04\; \rm kg} \approx 11.0\; \rm m \cdot s^{-2}.

The process in which organ systems work to maintain a stable internal environment is called homeostasis. Keeping a stable internal environment requires constant adjustments. Here are just three of the many ways that human organ systems help the body maintain homeostasis:
Respiratory system: A high concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood triggers faster breathing. The lungs exhale more frequently, which removes carbon dioxide from the body more quickly.
Excretory system: A low level of water in the blood triggers retention of water by the kidneys. The kidneys produce more concentrated urine, so less water is lost from the body.
Endocrine system: A high concentration of sugar in the blood triggers secretion of insulin by an endocrine gland called the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps cells absorb sugar from the blood.
