The highest frequency that a healthy ear can typically hear is 2.0 × 104 Hz. Assume that a sound wave with this frequency travel

s at 346 m/s and passes through a doorway that has a width of 0.94 m. (a) Determine the angle that locates the first minimum to either side of the central maximum in the diffraction pattern for the sound. (b) Suppose that yellow light (wavelength = 569 nm, in vacuum) passes through a doorway and that the first dark fringe in its diffraction pattern is located at the angle determined in part (a). How wide would this hypothetical doorway have to be?

(a) 1.05^{\circ}

The equation that gives the location of the minima in a diffraction pattern from a single slit is:

a sin \theta = n\lambda (1)

where

a is the width of the slit

\theta is the angle of the nth-minimum

\lambda is the wavelength of the wave

Here we want to know the location of the first minimum, so n=1.

In order to find the wavelength of the sound wave, we must divide the speed of the wave by the frequency:

\lambda=\frac{v}{f}=\frac{346 m/s}{2.0\cdot 10^4 Hz}=0.0173 m

And the slit width is

a = 0.94 m

So we can now re-arrange the eq.(1) to find the angle of the first minimum:

\theta = sin^{-1} (\frac{n\lambda}{a})=sin^{-1}(\frac{(1)(0.0173 m)}{0.94 m})=1.05^{\circ}

(b) 3.1\cdot 10^{-5} m

This time, we have

\lambda=569 nm=5.69\cdot 10^{-7} m is the wavelength of the yellow light

\theta=1.05^{\circ} is the angle of the first minimum

So, re-arranging the formula for a, we find how wide the doorway should be:

a=\frac{n\lambda}{sin \theta}=\frac{(1)(5.69\cdot 10^{-7} m)}{sin(1.05^{\circ})}=3.1\cdot 10^{-5} m

You toss a ball straight up with an initial speed of 30m/s. How high does it go, and how long is it in the air (neglecting air r
Brut [27]

Explanation:

Given that,

A ball is tossed straight up with an initial speed of 30 m/s

We need to find the height it will go and the time it takes in the air.

At its maximum height, its final speed, v = 0 and it will move under the action of gravity. Using equation of motion :

v = u +at

Here, a = -g

v = u -gt

i.e. u = gt

t=\dfrac{u}{g}\\\\t=\dfrac{30\ m/s}{9.8\ m/s^2}\\\\t=3.06\ s

So, the time for upward motion is 3.06 seconds. It means that it will in air for 3.06×2 = 6.12 seconds

Let d is the maximum distance covered by it.

d=ut-\dfrac{1}{2}gt^2

Putting all values

d=30(3.06)-\dfrac{1}{2}\times 9.8\times (3.06)^2\\\\d=45.91\ m

Hence, it will go to a height of 45.91 m and it will in the air for 6.12 seconds.

On which date is the gravitational force between Earth and the moon the greatest?
Genrish500 [490]

The gravitational forces between the Earth and Moon are greatest when the two bodies are closest together. That happens every 27.32 days, when the Moon is at the perigee of its orbit.

Even if this happened at the same time in every orbit, the date would change, because there are not 27.32 days in a month.

But it doesn't happen at the same time in every orbit ... the Moon's perigee precesses around its orbit, on account of the gravitational forces toward the Earth, the Sun, Venus, Mars, and the other planets.

A 5 kg ball rolling at 1.0 m/s hits a 15 kg ball at rest. The balls stick together after the collision What is the
Reika [66]

Answer:

0.25m/s

Explanation:

Given parameters

m₁  = 5kg

v₁ = 1.0m/s

m₂ = 15kg

v₂ = 0m/s

Unknown:

velocity after collision = ?

Solution:

Momentum before collision and after collision will be the same. For inelastic collision;

    m₁v₁ + m₂v₂  = v(m₁ + m₂)

Insert parameters and solve for v;

   5 x 1  + 15 x 0 = v (5 + 15 )

          5  = 20v

          v = \frac{5}{20}   = 0.25m/s
