Heat

You can usually warm something by adding energy. The added energy can be from light, electricity, friction, a chemical reaction, nuclear reaction, or any other kind of energy. When first added to a substance, energy might be concentrated in one atom, but this one will soon bump into others and spread the energy. Eventually, every atom or molecule in the substance will move a bit faster. When the added energy is spread throughout a substance, it is then called heat energy, thermal energy, or, simply heat. All three terms mean the same thing. Heat is a form of energy, so it has the units of energy. In the SI system, this is Joules. Many other units to measure thermal energy are in common use. Calories and BTU's are common heat units.

Temperature

You cannot measure heat directly, but you can detect its effect on a substance. Changes in heat can usually be detected as changes in temperature. Usually, when you add energy to a bunch of atoms they move faster and get hotter. Similarly, if you remove energy from a bunch of atoms, they usually move less and get cooler.

The old rubber boot has two leaks. The top of the boot is 0.3 m higher than the leaks. What is the velocity of the water coming
Otrada [13]

Answer:

Leak 1 = 3.43 m/s

Leak 2 = 2.42 m/s

Explanation:

Given that the top of the boot is 0.3 m higher than the leaks.

Let height H = 0.3m and the acceleration due to gravity g = 9.8 m/s^2

From the figure, the angle of the leak 1 will be approximately equal to 45 degrees. While the leak two can be at 90 degrees.

Using the third equation of motion under gravity, we can calculate the velocity of leak 1 and 2

Q7:<br> A 4 kg toy is lifted off the ground and falls at 3 m/s. What is the toy's energy?
alexandr1967 [171]

Answer:

The toy's energy is 18 J.

Explanation:

We have, a 4 kg toy is lifted off the ground and falls at 3 m/s. It is required to find toy's energy.

The toy will have kinetic energy due to its motion. The energy is given by :

E=\dfrac{1}{2}mv^2\\\\E=\dfrac{1}{2}\times 4\times 3^2\\\\E=18\ J

So, the toy's energy is 18 J.

A person throws a ball straight up. He releases the ball at a height of 1.75 m above the ground and with a velocity of 12.0 m/s.
Lyrx [107]

Answer:

a) 1.22 s

b) 9.089 m

Explanation:

t = Time taken

u = Initial velocity

v = Final velocity

s = Displacement

a = Acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/s²

v=u+at\\\Rightarrow t=\frac{v-u}{a}\\\Rightarrow t=\frac{0-12}{-9.81}\\\Rightarrow t=1.22\ s

Time taken by the ball to reach the highest point is 1.22 seconds

s=ut+\frac{1}{2}at^2\\\Rightarrow s=12\times 1.22+\frac{1}{2}\times -9.81\times 1.22^2\\\Rightarrow s=7.339\ m

The maximum height the ball will reach above the ground is 1.75+7.339 = 9.089 m

A pendulum swings in an arc in which each successive swing is 40% as long as the previous swing. if the first swing covers an ar
nlexa [21]
The situation given above is that of the geometric sequence with first term equal to 75 meters and the common ratio equal to 0.40. The sum of the terms for an infinite geometric sequence is expressed in the equation,
                                 S = a1/(1 - r)
Substituting,
                               S = (75 m) / (1 - 0.4) = 125 m
Therefore, the total distance that the pendulum had swung before finally coming to rest is 125 m.
