One mole of neon, a monatomic gas, starts out at conditions of standard temperature and pressure. the gas is heated at constant

volume until its pressure is tripled, then further heated at constant pressure until its volume is doubled. assume that neon behaves as an ideal gas. for the entire process, find the heat added to the gas.

We can use the ideal gas law PV=nRT For the first phase The starting temperature (T1) is 273.15K (0C). n is 1 mole, R is a constant, P = 1 atm, V1 is unknown. The end temperature (T2) is unknown, n= 1 mol, R is a constant, P = 3*P1= 3 atm, V2=V1 Since n, R, and V will be constant between the two conditions: P1/T1=P2/T2 or T2= (P2*T1)/(P1) so T2= (3 atm*273.15K)/(1 atm)= 3*273.15= 816.45K For the second phase: Only the temperature and volume change while n, P, and R are constant between the start and finish. So: V1/T1=V2/T2 While we don't know the initial volume, we know that V2=2*V1 and T1=816.45K So T2=(V2*T1)/V1= (2*V1*T1)/V1=2*T1= 2*816.45K= 1638.9K To find the total heat added to the gas you need to subtract the original amount of heat so 1638.9K-273.15K= 1365.75K

2.) At what temperature in Celsius will a 1.0g sample of neon gas exert a pressure of 500 torr in a 5.01 L container. (Hint: use
Studentka2010 [4]

The required temperature of the sample of gas is 823K.

What is ideal gas equation?

Ideal gas equation gives idea about the behavior of gas at different condition & represented as:

PV = nRT, where

 • P = pressure = 500 torr = 0.657 atm
 • V = volume = 5.01 L
 • R = universal gas constant = 0.082 L.atm / K.mol
 • T = temperature = ?
 • n = moles

Moles will be calculated as:
n = W/M, where

 • W = given mass
 • M = molar mass

Moles of Neon gas = 1g / 20.1g/mol = 0.049 mole

On putting all these values in the above equation, we get

T = (0.657)(5.01) / (0.049)(0.082) = 822.8 = 823 K

Hence required temperature of the sample is 823 K.

Explain the results for the tube in which 1.0 m naoh was added to benzoic acid. write an equation for this, using complete struc
nikklg [1K]

When sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is added to benzoic acid (CC_{6}H_{5}COOH), sodium benzoate and water (H_{2}O) are formed because benzoic acid is weak acid and NaOH is strong base. The reaction is shown in diagram 1. To the tube of sodium benzoate, if 6 m HCl is added, sodium benzoate salt will react with HCl and produce benzoic acid and sodium chloride, NaCl. The reaction is shown in diagram 2.
