Bromium has two naturally occurring isotopes: 79br, with an atomic weight of 78.918 amu, and 81br, with an atomic weight of 80.9

16 amu. if the average atomic weight for br is 79.903 amu, calculate the fraction-of-occurrences of these two isotopes. [hint: work on example problem 2.1]

The two different isotopes have weights :

w1 = 78.918 amu

w2 = 80.916 amu

average weight w3 = 79.903 amu

The mixing of two components can be modeled as

let the fraction of w1 be 'x'

hence w1. x + w2.(1-x) = w3

now this is a linear equation in 'x'. Substituting the values we get

x = 0.507

hence the percentage of Br79 = 50.7% and the percentage of BR81 = 49.3%

Find the work done in pumping gasoline that weighs 6600 newtons per cubic meter. A cylindrical gasoline tank 3 meters in diamete
Sonbull [250]

Answer:

work done in pumping the entire fuel is 466587 J

Explanation:

weight of the gasoline per volume = 6600 N/m^3

diameter of the tank = 3 m

length of the tank = 2 m

height of the tractor tank above the top of the tank = 5 m

work done in pumping fuel to this height = ?

First, we find the volume of the fuel

since the tank is cylindrical, we assume that the fuel within also takes the cylindrical shape.

Also, we assume that the fuel completely fills the tank.

volume of a cylinder = \pi r^{2}l

where r = radius = diameter ÷ 2 = 3/2 = 1.5 m

volume of the cylinder = 3.142 x 1.5^{2} x 2 = 14.139 m^3

we then find the total weight of the fuel in Newton

total weight = (weight per volume) x volume

total weight = 6600 x 14.139 = 93317.4 N

work done = (total weight of the fuel) x (height through which the fuel is pumped)

work done in pumping = 93317.4 x 5 = 466587 J

A box of books weighing 325N moves at a constant velocity across the floor when the box is pushed with a force of 425 N exerted
iragen [17]

Answer:The coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.61

Explanation:A state of constant velocity connotes an acceleration equal to zero {this is evident from Acceleration=(final velocity-initial velocity)/time}

Consequently,a balanced forces system is attained

Force of pulling

F(x)=F×cosα=425N×0.817=347N

is equivalent to the resistance force.

F=U(k)×(Fw+Fsinα)=U(k)×(325N+425N×0,576)=U(k)×570N

Note; U(k) is the coefficient of kinetic friction

Equating the two force components,

The coefficient of static friction ×570N= 347N

The coefficient of static friction = 347N/570N

The coefficient of static friction =0.61

Please note that the coefficient of static friction is dimensionless .

This is as a result of the same unit of forces whose division resulted in the determination of the coefficient of kinetic friction.
