A student is attempting to solve a multi-step equation. Sample mathematical work is shown below. Which statement best applies to

the sample mathematical work?
Given the equation , I must solve for m. I first subtract 8 from both sides, which gives me
−m/2
= -25/3. I then multiply both sides by –2, which gives me the final answer of m=50/3

A) The student incorrectly subtracted 8 from both sides.
B) The student incorrectly multiplied both sides by –2.
C) The final answer is not reduced or simplified.

I think the answer is c because it shows the final answer as a improper fraction so the final answer needs to be reduced or simplified.

It is 6 units because you find the absolute value of the two different coordinates, in this case it is 4 and -2. Since they belong in different quadrants (one x or y value is positive and the other is negative) you add them. If they are both in the same quadrant, you subtract them.

Similar polygons only differ by a scaling factor. In other words, two polygons are similar if one is the scaled version of the other.

In particular, this implies that the angles are preserved, and the correspondent sides are in proportion.

These two polygons are both rectangles, so the angles are preserved. We must check the sides, and we have to check if the smaller sides are in the same proportion as the bigger sides.

So, the two rectangles are similar if the following is true.

4\div 5 = 11\div 12

In any proportion, the product of the inner terms must be the same as the product of the outer terms:

4\cdot 12 = 5\cdot 11 \iff 48=55

This is clearly false, and thus the two rectangles are not similar.
