The Copperheads were a faction of the Democratic party that developed in the 1860s. They were also known as Peace Democrats due to the fact that they opposed the American Civil War. The Copperheads wanted to reach a peace settlement with the Confederates. This was a highly contentious position, and Copperheads were generally disliked by both sides of the conflict.
