The answer is individual freedom and efficiency. By tradition, business people in the united states typically place a high value on freedom and efficiency.

EXPLANATION

Individual freedom, mainly freedom of speech is highly valued in the US workplace. This is reflected in their company structure that is relatively flatter and their working style that is more open. In US business culture, subordinates can truthfully express their ideas even if they disagree with their manager. Everyone’s opinion matters, regardless of their position.

In fact, US people value discussion rather than mere instruction. Thus, contributes to more innovation. On the other hand, the Asian culture is completely the opposite. People in the higher position will make most of the decisions, some of which may not involve any discussion with the subordinates. The hierarchy is clear. They tend to value obedient more than honest opinions.

The second value is efficiency. Efficiency can come in many forms and the most fundamental example is punctuality. For US people, punctuality shows reliability. Business people in the US truly live by the phrase “time is money”. They try to arrive on time for meetings and get on to the business agenda quickly.

This culture is clearly different from the Asian business culture where people tend to be slower and arriving late to a meeting is normal. Furthermore, they tend to open the conversation with small talks instead of getting to the matter at hand directly.
