A seesaw has an irregularly distributed mass of 50 kg, a length of 3.0 m, and a fulcrum beneath its midpoint. It is balanced whe

n a 60-kg person sits on one end and a 86-kg person sits on the other end.
Locate the center of mass of the seesaw (a distance from the 50-kg person).

Answer:

d_{CM} = 0.78 m

Explanation:

given,

mass of seesaw,m= 50 kg

length of seesaw, d = 3 m

mass of person on one end, m₁ = 60 Kg

mass of person on another end, m₂ = 86 Kg

position of center of mass = ?

System is in equilibrium

Clockwise moment is equal to anticlockwise moment.

m_1 g\dfrac{d}{2} + m g d_{CM} = m_2 g \dfrac{d}{2}

m_1 d + 2 m d_{CM} = m_2 d

d_{CM} = \dfrac{m_2 d-m_1 d}{2 m}

d_{CM} = \dfrac{86\times 3 - 60\times 3}{2\times 50}

d_{CM} = 0.78 m

hence, the position of center of mass from the fulcrum is 0.78 m on 60 Kg mass side.

The potential energy of a spring is given by:
V = 0.5 * k * x²

k spring constant
x compression of the spring

If the block starts from rest it has potential energy, but no kinetic energy. As it slides down the incline potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. When the block hits the spring the kinetic energy is converted into spring's potential energy. If the spring is fully compressed and the block is at rest again, the block has transferred all its energy into the spring. No energy is lost. So we can write:

m * g * h = 0.5 * k * x²

m = 0.5 kg
g = 9.81 m/s²
h = 2.5m * sin 37° = 1,5 m
x = 0,6 m

Solve for k.

k = 2 * m * g * h / x² = 40.8 N/m

A motor keep a Ferris wheel (with moment of inertia 6.97 × 107 kg · m2 ) rotating at 8.5 rev/hr. When the motor is turned off, t
Talja [164]

Answer:

P = 133.13 Watt

Explanation:

Initial angular speed of the ferris wheel is given as

\omega_i = 2\pi f

\omega_i = 2\pi(8.5/3600)

\omega_i = 0.015 rad/s

final angular speed after friction is given as

\omega_f = 2\pi f

\omega_f = 2\pi(7.5/3600)

\omega_f = 0.013 rad/s

now angular acceleration is given as

\alpha = \frac{\omega_f - \omega_i}{\Delta t}

\alpha = \frac{0.015 - 0.013}{15}

\alpha = 1.27 \times 10^{-4} rad/s^2

now torque due to friction on the wheel is given as

\tau = I \alpha

\tau = (6.97 \times 10^7)(1.27 \times 10^{-4})

\tau = 8875.3 N m

Now the power required to rotate it with initial given speed is

P = \tau \omega

P = 8875.3 \times 0.015

P = 133.13 Watt
