How is radiation different from convection and conduction?

Physics

Answer:  It can travel through empty space

Explanation:

Let's begin by explaining that there are <u>three</u> ways in which the thermal transfer occurs:

1. By Conduction, when the transmission is by the <u>direct contact.</u>

2. By Convection,<u> heat transfer in fluids</u> (like water or the air, for example).

3. By Radiation, by the <u>electromagnetic waves</u> (<u>they can travel through any medium and in vacumm</u>) .

Hence, both conduction and convection need matter to transfer thermal energy, but by radiation there is no need of matter for the heat transfer.

So, since outter space is vacuum (sometimes called "empty" or "empty space"), energy cannot be transmitted by convection, nor conduction. Therfore, it must be transmitted by electromagnetic waves that are able to travel with or without a medium (by radiation).

Explain why increasing the temperature of a gas in a closed, rigid container causes the pressure in the container to increase.

The atoms/ particles that are in the gas have gotten energy from the heat, because of that, they zoom around the container, putting pressure on it :) hope it helps :)

An unpolarized beam of light with an intensity of 4000 W/m2 is incident on two ideal polarizing sheets. If the angle between the
erastova [34]

Answer:

The intensity is  I_2  =  1654 \ W/m^2

Explanation:

From the question we are told that

    The intensity of the unpolarized light is  I_o  =  4000 \ W/m^2

    The  angle between the ideal polarizing sheet is  \theta =  0.429 \ rad = 0.429 *  57.296 =  24.58^o

Generally the intensity of  light emerging from the first polarizer is mathematically represented as

               I_2  =  \frac{I_o}{2}

substituting values

               I_1  =  \frac{4000}{2}

                I_1  =  2000 \ W/m^2

Then the intensity of  incident light emerging from the second polarizer is mathematically represented by Malus law as

                 I_2  =  I_1  cos^2 (\theta )

substituting values

                I_2  = 2000  * [cos (24.58)]^2

                I_2  =  1654 \ W/m^2
