How does equilibrium represent the balancing of opposing processes?

Chemistry

When a chemical reaction comes to equilibrium the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the backward. Both the reactants consume and the products formed are occurring at an equal rate.  Thus in equilibrium the two reactions occur in opposite direction and they balance out each other.

The equilibrium will change depending on which process is favored in a condition. for example in reversible chemical reaction that will proceed at higher temperature. if the temperature is increase the products will be formed, but when the temperature is then lowered, the products will now form back to its reactants

Calculate the standard cell potential given the following standard reduction potentials: Al3++3e−→Al;E∘=−1.66 V Cu2++2e−→Cu;E∘=0
Maru [420]

Answer:

Explanation:

To calculate the cell potential we use the relation:

Eº cell = Eº oxidation + Eº reduction

Now in order to determine which of the species is going to be oxidized, we have to remember that the more the value of the reduction potential is negative,  the greater its tendency to be oxidized is. In electrochemistry we use the values of the reductions potential in the tables for simplicity  because the only thing we need to do is change the sign of the reduction potential for the oxized species .

So the species that is going to be oxidized is the Aluminium, and therefore:

Eº cell = -( -1.66 V ) + 0.340 V =  5.06 V

Equally valid is to write the equation as:

Eº cell = Eº reduction for the reduced species - Eº reduction for the oxidized species

These two expressions are equivalent, choose the one you fell more comfortable but be careful with the signs.

TIME REMAINING 52:03 Considering the activity series given below for metals and nonmetals, which reaction will occur?
Luden [163]

Answer:

2NaBr + I2 Right arrow. 2NaI + Br2

2AgNO3 + Ni Right arrow. Ni(NO3)2 + 2Ag

Explanation:

The activity or electrochemical series is an arrangement of elements according to their order

of reactivity.

If we look at the reactions, one thing that we must note is that the reactions that can occur are those in which an element that is higher in the series displaces another element that is lower in the series.

Br is higher in the electrochemical series than I so it can displace it. Ni is higher than Ag in the electrochemical series hence it can displace it.

When may a scientific theory be revised
harina [27]

Answer:

A theory doesn’t change into a scientific law because of new or better evidence.

Explanation:

A theory will always remain a theory, and i law will remain a law. The reason being that theories and laws may differ on account of newfound countervailing evidence. Remember, theories and laws are very different from hypotheses.
