A mercury barometer is an instrument in which the weight of a column of mercury in a glass tube with a sealed top is balanced ag

ainst that of the atmosphere pressing on an exposed cistern of mercury at the base of the mercury column. The height of the column varies with atmospheric pressure. What is the height of the mercury column if you are on top of a mountain where the pressure of the atmosphere is 0.455 atm? The density of mercury is 13.6 \cdot 10 ^3⋅10 3 kg/m^3 3 .

Answer:

h = 0.346 m

Explanation:

mercury barometer:

  • Pa = ρgh

∴ Pa = 0.455 atm = 46102.875 Pa = 46102.875 Kg/ms²

∴ ρ = 13600 Kg/m³

∴ g = 9.80 m/s²

⇒ h = (46102.875 Kg/ms²) / (13600 Kg/m³ )(9.80 m/s²)

⇒ h = 0.346 m

At a certain temperature, the decomposition of NO2 is second order with a rate constant of 2.85 M-1min-1. If one starts with 1.7
alex41 [277]

Answer: It will take 0.50 minutes for it to decompose to 28.2% of its initial value

Explanation:

Integrated rate law for second order kinetics is given by:

\frac{1}{a}=kt+\frac{1}{a_0}

a= concentration left after time t = \frac{28.2}{100}\times 1.77=0.50M

k = rate constant =2.85M^{-1}min^{-1}

{a_0}  = initial concentration = 1.77

t= time taken for decomposition

\frac{1}{0.50}=2.85\times t+\frac{1}{1.77}

t=0.50min

Thus it will take 0.50 minutes for it to decompose to 28.2% of its initial value

34.2 gram of sucrose is dissolved in 180 gram water. Calculate the number of hydrogen and oxygen atoms present in the solution.
Naddika [18.5K]

Explanation:

34.2g of C12H22O11 is dissolved in 180g of H20.

Molar mass of sucrose = 342g/mol

Moles of sucrose = 342 / 34.2 = 10 mol.

Molar mass of water = 18g/mol

Moles of water = 180 / 18 = 10 mol.

For hydrogen atoms, there are 22 * 10 in sucrose and 2 * 10 in water, which gives a total of 240.

For oxygen atoms, there are 11 * 10 in sucrose and 1 * 10 in water, which gives a total of 120.
