Jan first uses a Michelson interferometer with the 606 nmnm light from a krypton-86 lamp. He displaces the movable mirror away f

rom him, counting 818 fringes moving across a line in his field of view. Then Linda replaces the krypton lamp with filtered 502 nmnm light from a helium lamp and displaces the movable mirror toward her. She also counts 818 fringes, but they move across the line in her field of view opposite to the direction they moved for Jan. Assume that both Jan and Linda counted to 818 correctly.
a) what distance did each person move the mirror?
b) resultant displacement of the mirror

Answer:

a) d₁ = 247.8 μm

d₂ = 205.3 μm

b) d₂ = 20.53 x 10⁻⁵ m = 205.3 μm

Explanation:

a)

The formula for Michelson Interferometer is derived to be:

d = mλ/2

where,

d = distance moved

m = no. of fringes

λ = wavelength of light

For JAN, we have following data

d = d₁

m = 818

λ = 606 nm = 606 x 10⁻⁹ m

Therefore,

d₁ = (818)(606 x 10⁻⁹ m)/2

<u>d₁ = 24.78 x 10⁻⁵ m = 247.8 μm</u>

For LINDA, we have following data

d = d₂

m = 818

λ = 502 nm = 502 x 10⁻⁹ m

Therefore,

d₂ = (818)(502 x 10⁻⁹ m)/2

<u>d₂ = 20.53 x 10⁻⁵ m = 205.3 μm</u>

b)

The resultant displacement can be found out from the difference between both displacement. And the direction of resultant displacement will be the same as the direction of greater displacement. Therefore,

Resultant Displacement = Δd = d₁ - d₂

Δd = 247.8 μm - 205.3 μm

<u>Δd = 42.5 μm (in the direction of JAN)</u>

What is the period of oscillation of a mass 40kg on a spring with constant k=10N/m?
iVinArrow [24]

The period of oscillation of the system is 12.56 s

Explanation:

The period of oscillation of a spring-mass system is given by

T=2\pi \sqrt{\frac{m}{k}}

where

m is the mass attached to the spring

k is the spring constant

For the system in this problem, we have

m = 40 kg

k = 10 N/m

Substituting into the equation, we find

T=2\pi \sqrt{\frac{40}{10}}=12.56 s

The number of mushrooms needed by a pizza restaurant is given by the
creativ13 [48]

Answer: 24

Explanation:

Given the following equation:

g=3n

Where g is the number of mushrooms in a pizza and n the number of pizzas.

If we know the restaurant will make 8 pizzas (n=8), then:

g=3(8)

g=24 This is the needed number of mushrooms for 8 pizzas

You obtain a 100-W light bulb and a 50-W light bulb. Instead of connecting them in the normal way, you devise a circuit that pla
lesantik [10]

Answer:

When they are connected in series

     The  50 W bulb glow more than the 100 W bulb

Explanation:

From the question we are told that

     The power rating  of the first bulb is P_1 = 100 \ W

      The power rating of the second bulb is  P_2 = 50 \ W

Generally the power rating of the first bulb is mathematically represented as

      P_1  =  V^2 R

Where  V is the normal household voltage which is constant for both bulbs

  So

        R_1  =  \frac{V^2}{P_1 }

substituting values

        R_1  =  \frac{V^2}{100}

Thus the resistance of the second bulb would be evaluated as

       R_2  =  \frac{V^2}{50}

From the above calculation we see that

        R_2  >  R_1

This power rating of the first bulb can also be represented mathematically as

        P_  1  =  I^2_1  R_1

This power rating of the first bulb can also be represented mathematically as

       P_  2  =  I^2_2 R_2

Now given that they are connected in series which implies that the same current flow through them so

       I_1^2 =  I_2^2

This means  that

       P \ \alpha  \  R

So  when they are connected in series

     P_2  >  P_1

This means that the 50 W bulb glows more than the 100 \ W bulb
