Chemistry

The electronegativity value of Br and Cl is 2.8 and 3.0 respectively.

The electrinegativity difference in the Br-Cl bond is 3.0 – 2.8 = 0.2

If the electronegativity difference is below 0.5 the covalent bind is nonpolar

If the electronegativity difference is between 0.5 and 2.0 the covalent bond is polar.

If the electronegativity difference is above 2.0 the bond is ionic

As the electronegativity difference is below 0.5 the Br-Cl covalent bond is nonpolar

Because there is a permanent dipole between the Br and Cl atom. The Cl atom has a higher electronegativity, so it will tend to pull the "shared" electrons formed in the bond to its pole, creating a permanent dipole and partial electron deficiency on the bromine atom.

A mug of boiling-hot water sits next to a glass of ice water.
seraphim [82]

Answer:

a) water molecules move rapidly in the mug of boiling water while they move slowly in the ice water. In the ice itself, the molecules stay in place.

b) Water must release energy to move from a higher to lower energy phase, i.e., from gas (water) vapor to liquid during condensation and from liquid to solid (ice) during freezing. In each case, the energy released by the water results in a change in the internal molecular bonding structure.

The thermite reaction, in which powdered aluminum reacts with iron oxide, is highly exothermic: 2Al(s) + F e2O3 (s)→A l2O 3 (s)
bija089 [108]
For this problem, we use the Hess' Law.

ΔHrxn = ∑(ν*Hf of products) - ∑(ν*Hf of reactants)

The ν represents the corresponding stoichiometric coefficients of the substances, while Hf is the heat of formation. For pure elements, Hf = 0.

Hf of Al₂O₃ = −1676.4 kJ/mol
Hf of Fe₂O₃ = -826.0 kJ/mol

Thus,

ΔHrxn = 1*−1676.4 kJ/mol + 1*-826.0 kJ/mol
ΔHrxn = -2502.4 kJ/mol

The amount of heat absorbed by the alcohol was determined to be 1.17kJ. Given that the specific heat of the alcohol is 2.42J/gC
quester [9]

Answer:

                      ΔT  =  20.06 °C

Explanation:

The equation used for this problem is as follow,

                                    Q  =  m Cp ΔT   ----- (1)

Where;

           Q  =  Heat  =  1.17 kJ = 1170 J

           m  =  mass  =  24.1 g

           Cp  =  Specific Heat Capacity  =  2.42 J.g⁻¹.°C⁻¹

           ΔT  =  Change in Temperature  =  ??

Solving eq. 1 for ΔT,

                                ΔT  =  Q / m Cp

Putting values,

                                ΔT  =  1170 J / 24.1 g × 2.42 J.g⁻¹.°C⁻¹

                                ΔT  =  20.06 °C
