train engine of mass 4500 kg is connected by a rope to boxcar A. Boxcar A is connected by a second rope to boxcar B, which is co

nnected by a third rope to boxcar C. All boxcars have the same mass, 1500 kg. The whole train is sitting on a flat railroad track. The train engineer starts the train engine moving so that the tension in the first rope, between the locomotive and boxcar A, is 4000 N. How fast is the whole train accelerating

Answer:

The acceleration is a =  0.889 \  m/s^2

Explanation:

From the question we are told that

The mass of the engine is m = 4500 \ kg

The mass of each Boxcar is m_b = 1500 \ kg

The tension between the locomotive and boxcar A is T  =  4000 \  N

Generally the tension between the locomotive and boxcar A is equivalent to the net force propelling the box cars so the tension is mathematically represented as

T =  F  =  M* a

Here M is the mass of the three box cars

=>       4000=  (3 * 1500)* a

=>         a =  0.889 \  m/s^2

6. A 145-g baseball moving 30.5 m/s strikes a stationary 5.75-kg brick resting on small rollers so it moves without significant
Sindrei [870]

Answer:

Explanation:

a )

momentum of baseball before collision

mass x velocity

= .145 x 30.5

= 4.4225 kg m /s

momentum of brick after collision

= 5.75 x 1.1

= 6.325 kg m/s

Applying conservation of momentum

4.4225 + 0 = .145 x v + 6.325 , v is velocity of baseball after collision.

v = - 13.12 m / s

b )

kinetic energy of baseball before collision = 1/2 mv²

= .5 x .145 x 30.5²

= 67.44 J

Total kinetic energy before collision = 67.44 J

c )

kinetic energy of baseball after collision = 1/2 x .145 x 13.12²

= 12.48 J .

kinetic energy of brick after collision

= .5 x 5.75 x 1.1²

= 3.48 J

Total kinetic energy after collision

= 15.96 J

Two or more velocities add by ____?

Plz help
VladimirAG [237]
By vector addition.
In fact, velocity is a vector, with a magnitude intensity, a direction and a verse, so we can't simply do an algebraic sum of the two (or more velocities).
First we need to decompose each velocity on both x- and y-axis (if we are on a 2D-plane), then we should do the algebraic sum of all the components on the x- axis and of all the components on the y-axis, to find the resultants on x- and y-axis. And finally, the magnitude of the resultant will be given by
R= \sqrt{(R_x)^2+(R_y)^2}
where Rx and Rx are the resultants on x- and y-axis. The direction of the resultant will be given by
\tan \alpha =  \frac{R_y}{R_x}
where \alpha is its direction with respect to the x-axis.

Which statements describe the Mercalli scale? Check all that apply.
konstantin123 [22]

Full question:

Which statements describe the Mercalli scale? Check all that apply.

A. This scale measures seismic waves based on their size.

B. This scale rates an earthquake according to how much damage it causes.

C.This scale produces a single rating for earthquakes that reach the surface.

D. This scale uses Roman numerals to rank the damage caused by an earthquake.

E.This scale measures the magnitude of an earthquake based on the size of seismic waves.

Answer:

The Mercalli scale : This scale rates an earthquake according to how much damage it causes and This scale uses Roman numerals to rank the damage caused by an earthquake.

Explanation:

The Modified Mercalli scale is intended to illustrate the consequences of an earthquake, at a contracted station, on tangible characteristics, on modern fittings and human beings.

The Modified Mercalli Intensity value ascribed to a particular site subsequent an earthquake has an extra significant means of severity to the nonscientist than the magnitude because intensity assigns to the outcomes really encountered at that position. This scale is comprised of 12 growing levels of intensity, denoted by Roman numerals, arranging from gradual shaking to catastrophic impairment.
