A 11600 kg railroad car is coasting on a level, frictionless track at a speed of 16.0 m/s when a 5420 kg load is dropped onto it

. If the load is initially at rest, find the new speed of the car and the % change of the kinetic energy.

Answer:

The speed of the car when load is dropped in it is 10.90 m/s.

Explanation:

Given that,

Mass of the railroad car, m₁ = 11600kg

Mass of the load, m₂ = 5420kg

It can be assumed as the speed of the car, u₁ = 16 m/s

Initially, it is at rest, u₂ = 0

The additional load is dropped onto the car.

Let v is the speed of the car. It can be calculated using the conservation of momentum as :

m_1u_1+m_2u_2=(m_1+m_2)vv=\dfrac{m_1u_1}{m_1+m_2}v=\dfrac{11600\times 16}{11600+5420}v = 10.90 m/s

So, the speed of the car when load is dropped in it is 10.90 m/s.

Which of Newton's laws explains why satellites need very little fuel to stay in oribit?
Angelina_Jolie [31]

Sattelites don't need any fuel to stay in orbit. The applicable law is...."objects in motion tend to stay in motion". Having reached orbital velocity, any such object is essentially "falling" around the earth. Since there is no (or at least very little) friction in the vacuum of space, the object does not slow.... It simply continues.

Sattelites in "low" earth orbit do encounter some friction from the very thin upper atmosphere, and they will eventually "decay".

Study the following reaction carefully. What classification should this reaction have?
Mariulka [41]

Answer:

Synthesis reaction

Explanation:

Synthesis reaction: two or more compounds combine to form one.

A + B → C

Decomposition reaction: one compound forms two or more.

C → A + B

Single replacement reaction: an element in one compound is replaced with another element.

AB + C → AC + B

Double replacement reaction: elements in two compounds replace each other.

AB + CD → AC + BD

Accelerating car is a _______
Pavel [41]

Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity as a function of time. For example a car traveling at 50 km/hr starts to accelerate, 10 seconds after, its speed changes to 100 km/hr then the acceleration of the car during the time can be calculated as below: initial speed = 50 km/hr.

A force of 20. Newtons to the left exerted on a cart for 10. Seconds. For what period of time must a 50.-newton force to the rig
FinnZ [79.3K]
Impulse = (force) x (time)

The first impulse was (20 N) x (10 sec) = 200 meters/sec

The second one is (50 N) x (time) and we want it equal to the first one, so

(50 N) x (time) = 200 meters/sec

Divide each side by 50N : Time = 200/50 = 4 seconds

By the way, the quantity we're playing with here is the cart's momentum.
