When 6.270 grams of a hydrocarbon, CxHy, were burned in a combustion analysis apparatus, 19.67 grams of CO2 and 8.055 grams of H

2O were produced. In a separate experiment, the molar mass of the compound was found to be 56.11 g/mol. Determine the empirical formula and the molecular formula of the hydrocarbon.

6.270/56.11 =  0.1117447870 /0.1117..  ≈  1
19.67/44.01 =  0.446943876  /0.1117..  ≈  4
8.055/18      =  0.4475            /0.1117..  ≈  41 mole of compound forms 4 moles of both CO2 and H2O, so the empirical formula will be C4H8
As this gives molar mass of 56.11, this is also the molecular formula
This could be cyclobutane, or butene

A cup of coffee (140g) cools from 75°C down to comfortable room temperature 20°C. How much energy does it release to the surroun
Thepotemich [5.8K]

Given that the mass of coffee in the cup = 140 g

Final temperature = 20^{0}C

Initial temperature = 75^{0}C

Let us assume the specific heat of coffee is equal to that of water = 4.184\frac{J}{g^{0}C }

Temperature change = T(final) - T(initial) = (20 - 75 )^{0}C

                                                                   =- 55 ^{0}C

-Heat given out by coffee = heat absorbed by the surroundings

Heat released into the surroundings =-(mC(T_{final}-T_{initial}))

                                             = -(140g)4.184\frac{J}{g^{0}C }( -55^{0}C)

                                             = 32,217 J

Explain how paper chromatography could be used to separate a mixture of different coloured inks
GuDViN [60]

Answer:

Chromatography is a method of separation of materials from a mixture. Paper chromatography is a technique of separation where, paper used as a stationary phase and solvent used to separate the sample used as a mobile phase. The sample is applied over the paper in small quantity. The components of the sample separates in a chromatographic paper due to the movement of solvent. The components of the sample moves with the solvent.

Paper chromatography is a useful technique for ink analysis. Ink consists of several dyes, which can be separated individually. When the ink is exposed to certain solvent mixtures the dyes of the ink dissolves in the mixture. Each ink components acquire distinct distance according to the retention factor. Some inks are water soluble, so the solvent used for separation should be water. Inks which are not water soluble are soluble in other solvents like alcohol.
