Four students are doing different friction experiments with a cylinder. Tristan is working with static friction, Arya is working

with sliding friction, Anoush is working with rolling friction, and Keran is working with fluid friction.
A. Tristan and Arya would exert more energy to overcome friction than Anoush and Keran.
B. Tristan and Anoush would exert more energy to overcome friction than Arya and Keran.
C. Tristan and Keran would exert less energy to overcome friction than Arya and Anoush.

Answer:

option A

Explanation:

Static friction occurs when the body tends to move. Static friction adjusts itself. Thus, larger energy is required if static friction is required to be overcome. Tristan is working with static friction.

Arya is working with sliding friction which occurs when the body slides. Anoush is working with rolling friction. Rolling friction occurs when the body tends to roll. It is easy to roll than slide a body which means rolling friction is less as compared to sliding friction. Keran is working with fluid friction. friction due to relative motion in liquids and gases is known as fluid friction. It is the least when compared to rest three explained above.

Thus, option A is correct that Tristan and Arya would have to exert more energy to overcome the friction as compared to other two.

What do you do if you are measuring something and it is between two whole numbers?
AnnZ [28]
Umm, I guess it really depends on what these numbers are for but what I can say is if you put this under physics then decimals are used very often and help express parts of numbers for this particular problem.And if it's directly between the two then it's 0.50 added to that smaller number,I hope that helps

The acrylic plastic rod is 20 mm long and 15 mm in diameter. If an axial load of 300 N is applied to it, determine the change in
Alecsey [184]

Given Information:

diameter = d = 15 mm

Length = L = 20 mm

Axial load = P = 300 N

Eₚ = 2.70x10⁹ Pa

vₚ = 0.4

Required Information:

Change in length = ?

Change in diameter = ?

Answer:

Change in length = 0.01257 mm

Change in diameter = -0.003772 mm

Explanation:

Stress is given by

σ = P/A

Where P is axial load and A is the area of the cross-section

A = 0.25πd²

A = 0.25π(0.015)²

A = 0.000176 m²

σ = 300/0.000176

σ = 1697792.8 Pa

The longitudinal stress is given by

εlong = σ/Eₚ

εlong = 1697792.8/2.70x10⁹

εlong = 0.0006288 mm/mm

The change in length can be found by using

δ = εlong*L

δ = 0.0006288*20

δ = 0.01257 mm

The lateral stress is given by

εlat = -vₚ*εlong

εlat = -0.4*0.0006288

εlat = -0.0002515 mm/mm

The change in diameter can be found by using

Δd = εlat*d

Δd = -0.0002515*15

Δd = -0.003772 mm

Therefore, the change in length is 0.01257 mm and the change in diameter is -0.003772 mm
