You've recently read about a chemical laser that generates a 20-cm-diameter, 25.0 MW laser beam. One day, after physics class, y

ou start to wonder if you could use the radiation pressure from this laser beam to launch small payloads into orbit. To see if this might be feasible, you do a quick calculation of the acceleration of a 20-cm-diameter,
100 kg,perfectly absorbing block. What speed would such a block have if pushed horizontally 100 m along a frictionless track by such a laser?

Answer:

0.408m/s

Explanation:

To develop this problem it is necessary to take into account the concepts related to the radiation pressure applied by an electromagnetic wave on a surface of perfect absorption. Radiation pressure can be viewed as a consequence of the conservation of momentum given the momentum attributed to electromagnetic radiation. According to Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism, an electromagnetic wave carries momentum, which will be transferred to an opaque surface it strikes.

The pressure is experienced as radiation pressure on the surface:

P= \frac{I}{c}

Where,

P = Pressure

I = Incident irrandiance

c= Speed of light in vacuum

For definition we know that Incident irradiance is defined as,

I = \frac{\dot{P}}{A}

Where \dot{P} is the Power required and A the area (For a circle in this case)

Then replacing,

P = \frac{\dot{P}}{Ac}

P = \frac{\dot{P}}{\pi r^2 c}

Substituting our values we have,

P = \frac{25*10^6}{\pi (0.2/2)^2 (3*10^8)}

P = 2.652N/m^2

With the pressure we can now calculate the Force and the Acceleration to find finally the velocity, that is

F = PA

F = 2.652*\pi*(\frac{0.2}{2})^2

F = 0.083N

The acceleration then would be expressed as indicate the Second Newton's Law

a = \frac{F}{m}

a = \frac{0.083}{100}

a = 8.33*10^{-4}m/s^2

The velocity is:

v = \sqrt{2ad}

v = \sqrt{2*8.33*10^{-4}*100}

v = 0.408m/s

Therefore the speed would such a block have if pushed horizontally 100m along a frictionless track by such a laser is 0.408m/s

Classify the following situations as involving balanced or unbalanced forces.
tester [92]

Answer:

1) Unbalanced

2) Balance

3) Balanced

4) Unbalanced

5) Unbalanced

Explanation:

For 1 and 5, since the objects are not at a constant speed/velocity, their forces must be unbalanced.

For 2 and 3, their speeds are constant so that means the force is balanced. If the bycicle or box started accelerating, that would indicate an unbalanced force

For 4, the speed is constant, but it's direction is not indicating another unbalanced outside force causing it to turn. The force is unbalanced.

An open container holds ice of mass 0.500 kgkg at a temperature of -17.4 âCâC . The mass of the container can be ignored. Heat i
MaRussiya [10]

Answer:

a) t = 235.2minute

b) 260.94minutes

Explanation:

Heat energy is defined as the energy required to change the temperature of a substance by 1kelvin.

It is expressed as H = mc∆t where m is the mass of the water

c is the specific heat capacity of the water/ice

∆t is the change in temperature

Total heat required to melt the ice

H = mLice + mc∆t

Lice is the latent heat of fusion of ice

a) To calculate how much time tmelts passes before the ice starts to melt, we will only calculate heat energy absorb by the ice before it melts.

H = mLice

H = 0.50(334000)

H = 167,000Joules

If heat is supplied to the container at the constant rate of 710 J/minute, the time taken before the ice starts to melt will be:

t = 167,000/710

t = 235.2minutes

b) To calculate how much time trise does it take before the temperature begins to rise above 0°C, we will calculate the total energy absorbed at 0°C first.

H = 0.50(334000) + 0.50(2100)(0-(-17.4)

Note that the ice melts at 0°C which will be the final temperature

H = 167,000+18270

H = 185,270oules

Since heat is supplied to the container at the constant rate of 710 J/minute

710Joules = 1minute

185,270Joules= x

x = 185,270/710

x = 260.94minutes

The time taken before the temperature begins to rise is 260.94minutes:
