In each of the given solutions, identify the solvent and the solute.
Leona [35]

Taking into account the definition of solvent and solute, you obtain that:

  • KBr is the solute and water is the solvent.
  • water is the solute and methanol is the solvent.
  • AgNO₃ is the solute and water is the solvent.

The solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more components that have the same chemical and physical properties in a single phase. A solution is made up of two main components: the solute and the solvent.

That is, the solute and the solvent are the components of a chemical solution, that is, of a homogeneous mixture that occurs when one or more substances are dissolved in another substance.

The solute is the substance that dissolves in a solution. In solution, the solute is usually found in a lower proportion than the solvent.

Solvent, also known as solvent, is the substance in which a solute dissolves, resulting in a chemical solution. Generally, the solvent is the component that is found in the highest proportion in the solution. It will always be the solvent who will determine the state of the matter that will have the solution.

In this case,  you consider that the solute is the component in less quantity and the solvent is the major component, and you know that:

a. A solution containing 30.0 g KBr and 100.0 g of water. Then, KBr is the solute and water is the solvent.

b. A solution containing 80.0 mL of methanol and 45.0 mL of water. Then, water is the solute and methanol is the solvent.

c. A solution containing 0.5 g AgNO₃ and 15 mL of water.  Being the density of water 1 g/mL, then 15 mL contains 15 g of water. Then, AgNO₃ is the solute and water is the solvent.
