A comet fragment of mass 1.96 × 1013 kg is moving at 6.50 × 104 m/s when it crashes into Callisto, a moon of Jupiter. The mass o

f Callisto is 1.08 × 1023 kg. The collision is completely inelastic. Assuming for this calculation that Callisto's initial momentum is zero kg · m/s, what is the recoil speed of Callisto immediately after the collision?

Answer:

Recoil speed, 1.17\times 10^{-5}\ m/s

Explanation:

Given that,

Mass of the comet fragment, m_1=1.96\times 10^{13}\ kg

Speed of the comet fragment, v_1=6.5\times 10^4\ m/s

Mass of Callisto, m_2=1.08\times 10^{23}\ kg

The collision is completely inelastic. Assuming for this calculation that Callisto's initial momentum is zero. So,

m_1v_1=(m_2+m_2)V

V is recoil speed of Callisto immediately after the collision.

V=\dfrac{m_1v_1}{(m_2+m_2)}\\\\V=\dfrac{1.96\times 10^{13}\times 6.5\times 10^4}{(1.96\times 10^{13}+1.08\times 10^{23})}\\\\V=1.17\times 10^{-5}\ m/s

So, the recoil speed of Callisto immediately after the collision is 1.17\times 10^{-5}\ m/s

A 1.83 kg book is placed on a flat desk. Suppose the coefficient of static friction between the book and the desk is 0.442 and t
fredd [130]

Answer:7.92 N

Explanation:

Given

mass of book m=1.83\ kg

coefficient of static friction \mu _s=0.442

coefficient of kinetic friction \mu _k=0.240

To move the book, one need to overcome  the static friction

Static friction F_s=\mu _sN

F_s=\mu _s\times 1.83\times 9.8

F_s=0.442\times 1.83\times 9.8

F_s=7.92\ N

After overcoming the Static friction , Force needed to move the block is

F_k=\mu _kN

F_k=0.240\times 1.83\times 9.8

F_k=4.30\ N

A strong lightning bolt transfers an electric charge of about 31 C to Earth (or vice versa). How many electrons are transferred?
olchik [2.2K]

Answer:

m=5.78\times 10^{-3}\ g

n_e=1.935\times 10^{20} is the no. of electrons

Explanation:

Given:

  • quantity of charge transferred, Q=31\ C

<u>No. of electrons in the given amount of charge:</u>

As we have charge on one electron 1.602\times 10^{-19}\ C

so,

n_e=\frac{Q}{e}

n_e=\frac{31}{1.602\times 10^{-19}}

n_e=1.935\times 10^{20} is the no. of electrons

  • Now if each water molecules donates one electron:

Then we require n=1.935\times 10^{20} molecules.

<u>Now the no. of moles in this many molecules:</u>

n_m=\frac{n}{N_A}

where

N_A=6.022\times 10^{23} Avogadro No.

n_m=\frac{1.935\times 10^{20}}{6.022\times 10^{23}}

n_m=3.213\times 10^{-4}\ moles

  • We have molecular mass of water as M=18 g/mol.

<u>So, the mass of water in the obtained moles:</u>

n_m=\frac{m}{M}

where:

m = mass in gram

3.213\times 10^{-4}=\frac{m}{18}

m=5.78\times 10^{-3}\ g
