You are standing on perfectly slippery ice. You have a tennis racket and a backpack full of tennis balls, and you propel yoursel

f southward by hitting the tennis balls northward against a brick wall. You accelerate fastest when the wall is how far away from you?

Answer:

The distance to the wall does not matter.

Explanation:

According to newton's third law, if you exert a force on the tennis ball to propel it northwards, it will exert equal and opposite force on you to propel you southwards. Therefore, how much you accelerate only depends on how fast you through the balls. And once a ball has left the system<em> ( consisting of you and the ball)</em>, it can no longer have an effect on you, so it doesn't matter whether the ball hits a wall nearby or the one millions of miles away.

<em>P.S: all of this is true assuming the balls don't bounce back from the wall and hit you in the face, which would surely give you additional southward acceleration, but it wouldn't be such a pleasant experience! </em>

What's the frequency of a wave with a wavelength of 10 and velocity of 200m/s?
uranmaximum [27]

Answer:

\boxed {\boxed {\sf 20 \ Hz}}

Explanation:

The frequency of a wave can be found using the following formula.

f=\frac{v}{\lambda}

where <em>f</em> is the frequency, <em>v</em> is the velocity/wave speed, and λ is the wavelength.

The wavelength is 10 meters and the velocity is 200 meters per second.

  • 1 m/s can also be written as 1 m*s^-1

Therefore:

v= 200 \ m*s^{-1} \\\lambda = 10 \ m

Substitute the values into the formula.

f=\frac{200 \ m*s^{-1}}{10 \ m}

Divide and note that the meters (m) will cancel each other out.

f=\frac{200 \ s^{-1}}{10 \ }

f=20 \ s^{-1}

  • 1 s^-1 is equal to Hertz
  • Therefore, our answer of 20 s^-1 is equal to 20 Hz

f= 20 \ Hz

The frequency of the wave is <u>20 Hertz</u>

marin [14]
When you punch holes in opposite corners of a milk carton filled with water which is hanging from a string, water will start to flow outside with a certain force. There will be a reaction equal and opposite to this force that will make the milk carton start to spin.

This is a typical example of water turbine that is used to demonstrate the third Newton's law.
