Thomson's experiments with cathode ray tubes helped him to discover the electron (which Dalton did not know about). Dalton thought that atoms were indivisible particles, and Thomson's discovery of the electron proved the existence of subatomic particles.

Pesticide A is more effective than B. After both were applied in a garden, there were fewer in the area sprayed with pesticide A
astra-53 [7]

Answer:

Independent variable: Type of pesticide

Dependent variable: Number of pests killed

Explanation:

A variable is a factor that can take on different values. In scientific researches, there are three main kinds of variables; Independent, dependent and control variables.

Independent variable: an independent variable is directly under the control of the experimenter. It is the variable that gives a value to the dependent value based on its manipulations. In this example, the type of pesticide used is dependent on the experimenter, either A or B

Dependent variable: This is a variable that is being studied. It is not directly under the manipulation of the experimenter but has its values from the changes of the independent variables. In this example, the number of pests killed is dependent on the changing of the type of pesticide used.

Control Variable: Control variables are extraneous variables that are not being directly studied but can affect the outcome of interest hence needs to be held constant.

Attempt 3 During an experiment, a student adds 2.90 g CaO 2.90 g CaO to 400.0 mL 400.0 mL of 1.500 M HCl 1.500 M HCl . The stude
kondor19780726 [428]

Answer:

Explanation:

Equation of the reaction:

CaO(s) + 2H+(aq) -----> Ca2+(aq) + H2O(g)

The ∆Hrxn would be for one mole of CaO reacted or 2 moles of H+, whichever is the limiting reactant.

Number of moles = mass ÷ molar mass

Molar mass of CaO = 40 + 16

= 56 g/mol

moles of CaO = 2.90/56

= 0.0518 mol

Number of moles = concentration × volume

moles of HCl = 400 × 10^-3 × 1.500 = 0.6 moles

Moles of HCl = moles of H+

From the equation, 1 mole of CaO reacted with 2 moles of H+ to give 1 mole of water.

To find the limiting reagent,

0.6 mole of H+/2 moles of H+ × 1 mole of CaO

= 0.3 moles of CaO(> 0.0518 moles)

So, CaO is limiting reactant.

∆H = m × Cp × ∆T

m = density × volume

= 400 × 1

= 400 g

Cp = 4.184 J/g-ºC

∆T = +6 ºC

∆H = 400 × 4.184 × 6

= 10041.6 J

Since the reaction is exothermic,

∆Hrxn = -∆H/mol(CaO)

= -10041.6/0.0518

= -193853 J

= -193.9 kJ/mol.

Describe how the ocean affects the temperature of coastal areas in the summer and winter.
kondaur [170]
Water takes longer to cool down and heat up because it detains temperature longer. So in the summer, coastal areas are cooler and the in the winter, coastal ares are warmer.

What determines the transition between different states of matter?
Scrat [10]

Answer:

Phase transition is when a substance changes from a solid, liquid, or gas state to a different state. Every element and substance can transition from one phase to another at a specific combination of temperature and pressure.
