The earth rotates once per day about an axis passing through the north and south poles, an axis that is perpendicular to the pla

ne of the equator. Assuming the earth is a sphere with a radius of 6.38 × 106 m, determine the speed and centripetal acceleration of a person situated (a) at the equator and (b) at a latitude of 30.0° north of the equator.

Answer

given,

Radius of earth = 6.38 x 10⁶ m

angular velocity  = \omega = \dfrac{2\pi}{day}

                            = \omega = \dfrac{2\pi}{86400\ s}

                            = \omega =7.27 \times 10^{-5}

a) at equator

velocity v   = R ω  = 6.38 x 10⁶ x 7.27 x 10⁻⁵

             v = 463.8 m/s

centripetal acceleration = R ω² = 6.38 x 10⁶ x (7.27 x 10⁻⁵)²

                                        = 0.0337 m/s²

b) at a latitude of 30.0° north of the equator

r = R cos θ  =  6.38 x 10⁶ cos 30⁰ =  3.19 x  10⁶ m

velocity v   = R ω  = 3.19 x  10⁶ x 7.27 x 10⁻⁵

            v = 231.9 m/s

centripetal acceleration = R ω² = 3.19 x  10⁶  x (7.27 x 10⁻⁵)²

                                        = 0.0168 m/s²

A railroad freight car of mass 3.34 × 104 kg collides with a stationary caboose car. They couple together, and 19.0% of the init
Tresset [83]

Answer:

4.123 * 10∧4 kg

Explanation:

mass of car M' = 3.34 * 10∧4 kg

energy loss E = 19/100  K

from law of conservation of momentum ,

                 M' V' = ( M' + M'' ) v

                        V = M' V' / ( M' + M'' )

       Initial kinetic energy is K'  = (M' V')² / 2

      final kinetic energy  K" = 81 K' /100

                                             =  (M' V')² 81 / (200)     =   ( M' + M'' ) v²/ 2

            therefore , M' / ( M' + M" ) = 0.81

 mass of caboose is ,  M" = 1.234 M' - M'

                                     M" = .234 M'

                                          = 0,234 ( 3.34 * 10∧4 kg)

                                          = 4.123 * 10∧4 kg
