A person is considered functional if the person has the ability to move freely. Basic functions of a person would be walking, running, jumping. Sensory and loco motor movements of a person are considered functions of a person. Once sensory and loco motors skills of a person is reduced it means that person is disabled.

Even though there are more complex ways of determining if a person suffers from a disease, examining the level of difficulty at performing ordinary daily tasks can help come to a medical conclusion rapidly.  These tasks not always have something to do with physical incapability, but social issues as well, since not every disease can be physically seen. Of course, there are different tasks to be watched depending on to which age group does the observed individual belongs.

For children, daily general tasks may be studying or socializing with friends, whereas for adults it can involve executing work related tasks efficiently, interaction with co-workers and family members.
