The age of a piece of wood from an archeological site is to be determined using the Carbon-14 method. The activity of the sample

is measured to be 0.596 times the Carbon-14 activity of living plants. What is the age of the sample in years? (The half-life of the Carbon-14 isotope is 5730 years.)

Bond [772]3 years ago

Answer:

4276.98 years

Explanation:

t = age of the sample in numbers of years

T = half life of the carbon-14 isotope = 5730 yrs

λ = decay constant of carbon-14

decay constant is given as

\lambda =\frac{0.693}{T}

\lambda =\frac{0.693}{5730}

\lambda = 0.000121

A₀ = activity of Carbon-14 in living plants

A  = activity of Carbon-14 after time "t" = (0.596) A₀

Using the equation

A = A_{o} e^{-\lambda t}

(0.596) A₀  = A_{o} e^{-0.000121 t}

0.596 = e^{-0.000121 t}

t = 4276.98 years

For a short period of time, the frictional driving force acting on the wheels of the 2.5-Mg van is N, where t is in seconds. If
KATRIN_1 [288]

Answer:

15.6m/s

Completed Question;

For a short period of time, the frictional driving force acting on the wheels of the 2.5-Mg van is N= 600t^2 , where t is in seconds. If the van has a speed of 20 km/h when t = 0, determine its speed when t = 5

Explanation:

Mass m = 2500kg

Speed v1 = 20km/h = 20/3.6 m/s = 5.556 m/s

To determine speed v2;

Using the principle of momentum and impulse;

mv1 + ∫₀⁵ F dt = mv2

Why do we use the hydrogen spectrum to identify if a star is red or blue<br> shifted? *
Lady_Fox [76]

Answer:

But if you place a clear container filled with hydrogen gas between the flashlight and the prism, gaps appear in the smooth rainbow of colors, places where the light literally goes missing. The dark absorption lines of a star at rest (left) get shifted towards red if the star is moving away from Earth (right)

Which of the following is a typical property of an ionic compound
Yanka [14]

The answer is C.

Ionic compounds are those that bring together anions and cations bonded together by ionic bonds. The electrostatic forces of the different charges are significant in the bonds that make them strong hence require high energy to break them (high melting point).  Due to the regular structure of ionic compound that tend to form lattices in solid form, when struck, they shatter along the lines of weakness of the lattice.
