What were the dynamics that led to the Rwandan genocide?

Answer:

The Rwandan genocide was due to ethnic conflict between the Hutu and the Tutsi.

Explanation:

Rwandan president Juvénal Habyarimana was assassinated on 6 April 1994 and this ushered in killings of especially Tutsi Rwandans on a massive scale. Rwanda was first colonized by the Germans in the 1880s but they ruled largely by indirect rule through the Tutsi king. Then the Belgian forces took control of Rwanda during World War I. The  Belgians modernized the Rwandan economy but the Tutsi were still favored for administrative positions and had other social advantages with the colonial administration over the Hutu. In the 1930s identity cards were introduced by Belgium that specified the ethnicity of individuals. Whereas before the categories were more fluid with wealthy Hutu being able to become honorary Tutsi, the identity cards made the divisions more rigid.
