3x+5y=-3 (x -2)

6x+12y=-12 (6x and

-6x-10y=6 -6x cancel)

12y=-12 (12y-10y)

-10y=6 (12-6)

2y=-6

y=-6÷2=3 (2 is brought across equals it divides)

y=3 (now replace 'y' in original equation with 3)

2x+4(3)=-4 (4×3=12)

2x+12=-4

2x=-4-12 (12 becomes -12 brought across equals)

2x=-16

x=-16÷2=-8 (multiply 16 across equals is divide 16)
