The wheels are 1.33 inches on model car

<em><u>Solution:</u></em>

Given that,

A toy car was created using a scale factor of 1 : 12

Wheels on the actual car are 16 inches

To find: Wheels of car on model

Let "x" be the wheels of car on model

Scale factor is 1 : 12

1 : 12

x : 16

Thus we get a proportion as,

\frac{1}{12} = \frac{x}{16}

Cross multiply to get value of "x"

1 \times 16 = x \times 12\\\\16 = 12x\\\\x = \frac{16}{12}\\\\x = 1.33

Thus the wheels are 1.33 inches on model car

tiny-mole [99]
A way to add fractions that always works is to multiply each numerator by the denominator of the other, then express the sum of products over the product of the denominators.
\dfrac{a}{b}+\dfrac{c}{d}=\dfrac{a}{b}\cdot\dfrac{d}{d}+\dfrac{c}{d}\cdot\dfrac{b}{b}\\\\=\dfrac{ad+bc}{bd}

Here, you have
\dfrac{-5}{4}-\dfrac{-1}{6}=\dfrac{-5\cdot6-(-1)\cdot4}{4\cdot6}=\dfrac{-26}{24}\\\\=\dfrac{-13}{12}=-1\frac{1}{12}

The sum is -1 1/12

R = { (x,y): 3x-y=0 }

The condition is 3x=y so that's not going to be any of these things.

R is reflexive if (x,x)∈R for all x.   Let's check.

3x - y = 3x - x = 2x ≠ 0  necessarily.   NOT REFLEXIVE

R is symmetric if (x,y)∈R → (y,x)∈R.   Let's check.

(x,y)∈R  so

3x-y = 0

y  = 3x

Is  (y,x)∈R.  That would be true if 3y-x=0

3y - x = 3(3x) - x = 8x ≠ 0 necessarily NOT SYMMETRIC

R is transitive if (x,y)∈R and (y,z)∈R → (x,z)∈R.   Let's check.

3x-y = 0  so y=3x

3y-z = 0 so z=3y = 9x

3x - z = 3x - 9x = -6x ≠ 0 necessarily   NOT TRANSITIVE
