Complete Question

A gas storage cylinder in an ordinary chemical laboratory measures 3.5 cm wide and 9.2 cm high with this label on it:

Contents: N2 Gas

Pressure 18.6 atm

If the cylinder is opened and the gas allowed to escape into a large empty plastic bag, what will be the final volume of nitrogen gas, including what’s collected in the plastic bag and what’s left over in the cylinder?

Use 1 atm for the gas final pressure

Answer:

The final volume is 1647.03cm³ or 1.65 litres

Explanation:

Given

Width of cylinder, W = 3.5 cm

Height of Cylinder, H = 9.2 cm

Gas Initial Pressure, P1 = 18.6 atm

Gas Final Pressure, P2 = 1 atm

First, the initial volume of gas has to be calculated to known the quantity of gas before gas outflow

Volume of Gas, V = Volume of a cylinder

V = πr²h

Given the the width of the cylinder is 3.5cm

This means that the diameter of the cylinder is also 3.5cm

Hence; Diameter, D = 3.5cm

Radius, r = ½D

r = ½ * 3.5cm

r = 1.75cm

So, V1 = πr²h becomes

V1 = π * 1.75² * 9.2

V1 = 28.175π cm³

V1 = 88.55 cm³

From Ideal Gas Law;

PV = nRT

Where k = PV (From Boyle's Law)

P1V1 = P2V2 ---- Make V2 the subject of formula

V2 = (P1V1)/P2

Where P1,P2,V1 and V2 represent the initial pressure, final pressure, initial volume and final volume, respectively.

Recall that P1 = 18.6 atm

P2 = 1 atm

V1 = 88.55 cm³

Final volume, V2 = (P1V1)/P2

V2 = (18.6 atm * 88.55 cm³)/1 atm³

V2 = 1647.03cm³

Convert to Litre

V2 = 1647.03/1000

V2 = 1.64703 litres

V2 = 1.65 L

Hence, the final volume is 1647.03cm³ or 1.65litres

Serhud [2]

Answer:

1362000 kgm/s

Explanation:

So the total mass combination of the plane and the people inside it is

M = 35000 + 160*65 = 45400 kg

After 15 seconds at an acceleration of 2 m/s2, the plane speed would be

V = 2*15 = 30 m/s

So the magnitude of the plane 15s after brakes are released is

MV = 45400 * 30 = 1362000 kgm/s

A speeding motorist traveling down a straight highway at 100 km/h passes a parked police car. It takes the police constable 1.0
Lubov Fominskaja [6]

Answer:

t = 7.5 s

Explanation:

The distance traveled by the car at the time of meeting of the two cars must be the same. First, we calculate the distance traveled by the police car. For that we use 2nd equation of motion. Here, we take the time when police car starts to be reference. So,

s₁ = Vi t + (0.5)gt²

where,

s₁ = distance traveled by police car

Vi = Initial Velocity = 0 m/s

t = time taken

Therefore,

s₁ = (0 m/s)(t) + (0.5)(9.8 m/s²)t²

s₁ = 4.9 t²

Now, we calculate the distance traveled by the car. For constant speed and time to be 1 second more than the police car time, due to car starting time, we get:

s₂ = Vt = V(t + 1)

where,

s₂ = distance traveled by car

V = Velocity of car = (100 km/h)(1000 m/1 km)(1 h/ 3600 s) = 27.78 m/s

Therefore,

s₂ = 27.78 t + 27.78

Now, we know that at the time of meeting:

s₁ = s₂

4.9 t² = 27.78 t + 27.78

4.9 t² - 270.78 t - 27.78 = 0

solving the equation and choosing the positive root:

t = 6.5 s

since, we want to know the time from the moment car crossed police car. Therefore, we add 1 second of starting time in this.

t = 6.5 s + 1 s

t = 7.5 s
