This is an incomplete question, here is a complete question.

Specify which atoms, if any, bear a formal charge in the Lewis structure given and the net charge for the species. Be sure to answer all parts.

:C\equiv N:

a. Formal charge C:___________.

b. Formal charge N:________.

d. Net charge:________.

Answer :

a. Formal charge C : (-1) charge

b. Formal charge N : (0) charge

d. Net charge : (-1) charge

Explanation :

Lewis-dot structure : It shows the bonding between the atoms of a molecule and it also shows the unpaired electrons present in the molecule.

In the Lewis-dot structure the valance electrons are shown by 'dot'.

The given molecule is, CN^-

As we know that carbon has '4' valence electrons and nitrogen has '5' valence electrons.

Therefore, the total number of valence electrons in CN^- = 4 + 5 + 1 = 10

According to Lewis-dot structure, there are 6 number of bonding electrons and 4 number of non-bonding electrons.

Now we have to determine the formal charge for each atom.

Formula for formal charge :

\text{Formal charge on C}=4-2-\frac{6}{2}=-1

\text{Formal charge on N}=5-2-\frac{6}{2}=0

Thus, the net charge will be = -1 + 0 = -1

What information can be learned about atoms of different elements by examining the periodic table
7nadin3 [17]

Answer:

The periodic table tells you the atomic number (which tells you the number of protons and electrons). It also includes the mass number, which is the sum of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.

What is the ph of a solution of 0.50 m acetic acid?
frosja888 [35]
You need to use the Ka for the acetic acid and the equilibrium equation.

Ka = 1.85 * 10^ -5

Equilibrium reaction: CH3COOH (aq) ---> CH3COO(-) + H(+)

Ka = [CH3COO-][H+] / [CH3COOH]

Molar concentrations at equilibrium

CH3COOH         CH3COO-     H+

 0.50  - x                  x                 x

Ka = x*x / (0.50 - x) = x^2 / (0.50 - x)

Given that Ka is << 1 => 0.50 >> x and 0.50 - x ≈ 0.50

=> Ka ≈ x^2 / 0.50

=> x^2 ≈ 0.50 * Ka = 0.50 * 1.85 * 10^ -5 = 0.925 * 10^ - 5 = 9.25 * 10 ^ - 6

=> x = √ [9.25 * 10^ -6] = 3.04 * 10^ -3 ≈ 0.0030

pH = - log [H+] = - log (x) = - log (0.0030) = 2.5

On a balance, you have beakers of AgNO3AgNO3 solution and NaClNaCl solution. When mixed, they will form AgCl(s)AgCl(s). What wil
statuscvo [17]

Explanation:

According to the law of conservation of mass, mass can neither be created nor it can be destroyed. But it can be simply transformed from one form to another.

Therefore, when AgNO_{3} is added to NaCl then the compound formed will have same mass as that of reactants.

       AgNO_{3} + NaCl \rightarrow AgCl + NaNO_{3}

Total mass of reactants is (169.87 + 58.44) g/mol = 228.31 g/mol

Total mass of products is (143.32 + 84.99) g/mol = 228.31 g/mol

Thus, we can conclude that mass of the new mixture will stay the same.
