The height of the Washington Monument is measured to be 170 m on a day when its temperature is 35.0°C. What will the change in i

ts height be on a day when its temperature fails to -18.0°C? Although the monument is made of limestone, take the thermal coefficient of expansion to be that of marble.

Answer:

The deformation is 0.088289 m

The final height of the monument is 170-0.088289 = 169.911702 m

Explanation:

Thermal coefficient of marble varies between (5.5 - 14.1) ×10⁻⁶/K = α

So, let us take the average value

(5.5+14.1)/2 = 9.8×10⁻⁶ /K

Change in temperature = 35-(-18) = 53 K = ΔT

Original length = 170 m = L

Linear thermal expansion

\frac{\Delta L}{L} = \alpha\Delta T\\\Rightarrow \Delta L=\frac{\alpha\Delta T}{L}\\\Rightarrow \Delta L=9.8\times 10^{-6}\times 53\times 170

The deformation is 0.088289 m

The final height of the monument is 170-0.088289 = 169.911702 m (subtraction because of cooling)

How does vacuum reduce thermal energy transfer
FrozenT [24]
The silver coating on the inner bottle prevents heat transfer by radiation, and the vacuum between its double wall prevents heat moving by convection. The thinness of the glass walls stops heat entering or leaving the flask by conduction.

If you see a sedimentary rock outcrop and red layers of sand are on top of pale yellow layers of sand, what do you know for sure
neonofarm [45]

Answer: The yellow layer is definitely older than the red layer

Explanation: According to Nicolaus Steno's law of superposition and original horizontality. Older rocks underlie younger rocks.

Sedimentary rocks are usually deposited in horizontal layers in which each stratigraphic layer is laid down before another can be deposited upon it.

The red layer, in addition to being older, is also likely to have undergone intense oxidation due to earlier exposure.
