Usually when you travel in a straight line, or one direction. The difference is that if you drive 10 feet in one direction, you are 10 feet from where you started. If you drive 10 feet forward, then 10 feet backward, you are in the same place you started, so you displaced yourself 0 feet. But, you travelled 10 ft + 10 ft, so your distance travelled is 20 ft.

They have the same magnitude when the travel is in a straight line with no curves or back-ups.

A ball resting on a roof 75 meters high has 1000 Joules of gravitational potential energy. Calculate the mass of the ball. (SHOW
Arturiano [62]

Answer:

The mass of the ball is 1.360 kilograms.

Explanation:

By Work-Energy Theorem, gravitational potential energy (U), in joules, is the product of weight of the ball (W), in newtons, and height (h), in meters. Please notice that weight is the product of the mass of the ball (m) and gravitational acceleration (g), in meters per square second. Then, the formula for the mass of the ball is:

m = \frac{U}{g\cdot h} (1)

If we know that U = 1000\,J, g = 9.807\,\frac{m}{s^{2}} and h = 75\,m, then the mass of the ball is:

m = \frac{U}{g\cdot h}

m = 1.360\,kg

The mass of the ball is 1.360 kilograms.

A bullet with a mass ????b=13.5mb=13.5 g is fired into a block of wood at velocity ????b=253vb=253 m/s. The block is attached to
Lorico [155]

Answer:

450 grams

Explanation:

Given:

mass of the bullet, m = 13.5 g = 0.0135 kg

velocity of the bullet, v = 253 m/s

spring constant of the spring, k = 205 N/m

Compression of the spring, x = 35.0 cm = 0.35 m

Now, the kinetic energy of the moving system (bullet + board) will tend to move the spring

thus,

let velocity of the system, V

now, applying the concept of conservation of momentum, we have

mv = (M + m)V

where,

M is the mass of the block

thus,

V = mv/(M + m)

now,

the kinetic energy of the system = (1/2)(M + m)V²

or

the kinetic energy of the system = (1/2)(M + m)(mv/(m + M))²

Energy gained by the spring = (1/2)kx²

now,

equating both the energies, we get

(1/2)(M + m)(mv/(m + M))² = (1/2)kx²

or

(mv)²/(m + M) = kx²

on substituting the values, we get

(0.0135 × 253)²/(0.0135 + M) = 205 × (0.35)²

or

11.66/(0.0135 + M) = 25.1125

or

M = 0.450 kg = 450 grams

Starting from zero, the electric current takes 2 seconds to reach half its maximum possible value in an RL circuit with a resist
Leno4ka [110]

Answer:

time=4s

Explanation:

we know that in a RL circuit with a resistance R, an inductance L and a battery of emf E, the current (i) will vary in following fashion

i(t)=\frac{E}{R}(1-e^\frac{-t}{\frac{L}{R}}), where imax=\frac{E}{R}

Given that, at i(2)=\frac{imax}{2} =\frac{E}{2R}

⇒\frac{E}{2R}=\frac{E}{R}(1-e^\frac{-2}{\frac{L}{R}})

⇒\frac{1}{2}=1-e^\frac{-2}{\frac{L}{R}}

⇒\frac{1}{2}=e^\frac{-2}{\frac{L}{R}}

Applying logarithm on both sides,

⇒log(\frac{1}{2})=\frac{-2}{\frac{L}{R}}

⇒log(2)=\frac{2}{\frac{L}{R}}

⇒\frac{L}{R}=\frac{2}{log2}

Now substitute i(t)=\frac{3}{4}imax=\frac{3E}{4R}

⇒\frac{3E}{4R}=\frac{E}{R}(1-e^\frac{-t}{\frac{L}{R}})

⇒\frac{3}{4}=1-e^\frac{-t}{\frac{L}{R}}

⇒\frac{1}{4}=e^\frac{-t}{\frac{L}{R}}

Applying logarithm on both sides,

⇒log(\frac{1}{4})=\frac{-t}{\frac{L}{R}}

⇒log(4)=\frac{t}{\frac{L}{R}}

⇒t=log4\frac{L}{R}

now subs. \frac{L}{R}=\frac{2}{log2}

⇒t=log4\frac{2}{log2}

also log4=log2^{2}=2log2

⇒t=2log2\frac{2}{log2}

⇒t=4

True or False:A wind is a horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure.
Taya2010 [7]

Answer:

True

Explanation:

  • When the air blows from high pressure to an area of low pressure over the surface of the earth it is called wind.
  • The greater the pressure difference more is the speed of the wind. The instrument used to measure the speed of the wind is called an anemometer.
  • The winds are named after the direction from which they flow.
  • Calm winds are the slowest of its kind whereas the gale-winds are the strongest winds.
