Consider the orbitals shown below. A short line has an arrow pointing up from it and a second arrow pointing down to it. Beneath

the line is the label 3 s. Beside it are three short lines. The first two of the lines have arrows pointing up from them. The centerline has the label 3 p under it. Which of these diagrams correctly shows the electron configuration for the atom with one more electron than the one shown above? A short line has both up and downward pointing arrows above it, and the label 3 s below it. Beside it are three more short lines; the first has an up and a down arrow, the second has an up arrow only, and the third has no arrows. The centerline of the three is labeled 3 p. A short line has an up and a down arrow above it, and the label 3 s below it. Beside it are three short lines. All three have up arrows. The centerline is labeled 3 p. A short line has an up and a down arrow above it, and the label 3 s below it. Beside it are three short lines. The first two have up arrows, and the third a down arrow. The centerline is labeled 3 p. A horizontal line with one up and one down arrow, labeled 3 s, and a group of three horizontal lines labeled 3 p. The first line has 2 up arrows, the second 1 up arrow, and the third is blank.

The acid-dissociation constant of hydrocyanic acid (hcn) at 25.0 °c is 4.9 ⋅ 10−10. what is the ph of an aqueous solution of 0.0
vodomira [7]
According to the reaction equation:

and by using ICE table:

              CN-  + H2O ↔ HCN  + OH-

initial  0.08                        0          0

change -X                        +X          +X

Equ    (0.08-X)                    X            X

so from the equilibrium equation, we can get Ka expression

when Ka = [HCN] [OH-]/[CN-]

when Ka = Kw/Kb

               = (1 x 10^-14) / (4.9 x 10^-10)

               = 2 x 10^-5

So, by substitution:

2 x 10^-5 = X^2 / (0.08 - X)

X= 0.0013

∴ [OH] = X = 0.0013

∴ POH = -㏒[OH]

            = -㏒0.0013

            = 2.886

∴ PH = 14 - POH

         = 14 - 2.886 = 11.11
