A parallel-plate capacitor has square plates that are 7.20 cm on each side and 3.40 mm apart. The space between the plates is co

mpletely filled with two square slabs of dielectric, each 7.20 cm on a side and 1.70 mm thick. One slab is Pyrex glass and the other slab is polystyrene. If the potential difference between the plates is 96.0 V, find how much electrical energy (in nJ) can be stored in this capacitor.

Answer:

U = 218 nJ

Explanation:

We are given;

Spacing between the plates; d = 3.4 mm = 3.4 × 10^(-3) m

Voltage across the capacitor; V = 96 V

Dimension of the square plates is 7.2cm x 7.2cm.

So, Area = 7.2 × 7.2 = 51.84 cm² = 51.84 × 10^(-4) m²

Permittivity of free space; ε_o = 8.85 × 10^(-12) C²/N.m²

From relative permeability table;

Dielectric constant of Pyrex; k1 = 5.6

Dielectric constant of polystyrene; k2 = 2.56

Now, formula for capacitance of a capacitor with Dielectric is;

C = kC_o

Where, C_o = ε_o(A/d)

Since there are 2 capacitors, d will now be d/2 = (3.4 × 10^(-3))/2 m = 1.7 × 10^(-3)

Since we have 2 capacitor, thus ;

C1 = k1*ε_o*(A/d)

C1 = (5.6 × 8.85 × 10^(-12) × (51.84 × 10^(-4))/(1.7 × 10^(-3))

C1 = 1.51 × 10^(-10) F

Similarly;

C2 = (2.56 × 8.85 × 10^(-12) × (51.84 × 10^(-4))/(1.7 × 10^(-3))

C2 = 0.691 × 10^(-10) F

For capacitors in series, formula for total capacitance(Cs) is;

1/Cs = (1/C1) + (1/C2)

Simplifying this, we have;

Cs = (C1*C2)/(C1 + C2)

Plugging in the relevant values ;

Cs = (1.51 × 10^(-10)*0.691 × 10^(-10))/((1.51 × 10^(-10)) + (0.691 × 10^(-10)))

Cs = 0.474 × 10^(-10) F

The formula for energy stored in a capacitor with 2 Dielectrics is given as;

U = ½Cs*V²

So,

U = ½ × 0.474 × 10^(-10) × 96²

U = 2.18 × 10^(-7) J = 218 × 10^(-9) = 218 nJ

Given the mechanism of C5M action, what is the most likely reason that C5M concentrations greater than 2 µM were NOT used by the
Sunny_sXe [5.5K]

Answer:

It can cause a significant negative effects on certain tissues and target cells.

Explanation:

Generally, based on the mechanism of C5M, its presence in any experiment can harm certain tissues and target cells. Therefore, the use of a large amount (in terms of concentration above 2 µM) of C5M will enhance the negative effects of C5M on the surrounding/neighboring tissue as well as the normal division of target cells. That is the reason why a higher concentration was not used in the experimental runs.

A rubber toy duck is at rest on an inclined plane. When the angle of inclination of the plane is increased to 36.0°, the toy duc
ch4aika [34]

Answer

toy begins to slide when the plane is at an angle of 36.0°

at this point the toy has just overcome the static friction

f_s = \mu_s N

f_s = \mu_s mgcos \theta

since toy begins to slide

f_s = mgsin \theta

now on comparing

mgsin \theta = \mu_s mgcos \theta

\mu_s = tan \theta

\mu_s = tan (36^0)

\mu_s = 0.726

as the body is moving at constant velocity acceleration will be zero

so now,

m g sin \theta - f_k = ma

m g sin \theta - \mu_k mg cos\theta = 0

\mu_k = tan \theta

\mu_k = tan (29^0)

\mu_k = 0.554

A bullet is fired vertically into a 1.40 kg block of wood at rest directly above it. if the bullet has a mass of 29.0 g and a sp
larisa86 [58]
5.47 m
The bullet undergoes a non-elastic collision with the block of wood and momentum is conserved. The initial momentum is 0.029 kg * 510 m/s = 14.79 kg*m/s. The combined mass of the block and bullet is 1.40 kg * 0.029 kg = 1.429 kg. Since momentum is conserved, the velocity of both combined will then be 14.79 kg*m/s / 1.429 kg = 10.34989503 m/s.
 With a local gravitational acceleration of 9.8 m/s^2, it will take 10.34989503 m/s / 9.8 m/s^2 = 1.056111738 s for their upward velocity to drop to 0, just prior to descending.
 The equation for distance under constant acceleration is
 d = 0.5 A T^2
 so
 d = 0.5 * 9.8 m/s^2 * (1.056111738 s)^2
 d = 4.9 m/s^2 * 1.115372003 s^2
 d = 5.465322814 m
  Rounding to 3 significant figures gives a height of 5.47 meters.

A 425 g block is released from rest at height h0 above a vertical spring with spring constant k = 460 N/m and negligible mass. T
Morgarella [4.7K]

Answer:

(a) = +5.38m (b) = -5.38m (c) = 1.246m (d) = +0.3771m.

Explanation:

Initially the spring is at equilibrium,

Work done by all forces = change in kinetic energy

Work = ∇K.E

Work = Kf -Ki =0

Since the work done = 0 since the body is at rest.

W(spring) + W(gravity) = 0

W(spring) + W(gravity) = 0

W(spring) = -W(gravity)

Work done by the block on the spring = W(block/spring)

W(block/spring) + W(spring) = 0

W(spring) = -∫kx.dx

W(spring) = ½k(X²i - X²f) ; Xi =0, Xf = 15.3cm = 0.153m

W(spring) = -½* 460 * (0.153)²

W(spring) = - 5.38NM

Work done by block on spring = + 5.38NM

(b). Workdone by spring on the block = -5.38NM.

Note: This is so because the displacement of the force is in the opposite direction to the previous one since they counter each other to maintain equilibrium.

(C). W(spring) +W(gravity) = 0

½kx² + mg(h + x) = 0

-5.83 + mg(h + 0.153) =0

5.83 = 0.425*9.8 (h + 0.153)

5.83 = 4.165(h + 0.153)

H = 1.399 - 0.153

H = 1.246m

(D).

If the release height was 6ho

H = 6* 1.246m = 7.476m

W(spring) = W(gravity)

½kx² = mg(7.476 + x)

Note: At maximum compression, the blocks would be at rest.

½Kx² = mg(h + x)

½ * 460 * x² = 0.425 * 9.8 * (7.476 + x)

230x² = 4.165 (7.476 + x)

230x² = 31.137 + 4.165x

230x² - 4.165x - 31.137 = 0

Solving the quadratic equation ( i would suggest you use formula method for easy navigation of the variables)

X = + 0.3771m or -0.3589m

But we can't have a negative compression value,

X = + 0.3771m
