Answer:

The answer to your question is: C₃H₄O

Explanation:

Data

CxHyOz = 8.5 g

CO2 = 20 g

H2O = 5.46 g

Reaction

             CxHyOz + O2     ⇒    CO2   +    H2O

CO2

    MW = 44g

                       44g CO2 ----------------- 12g of C

                        20g CO2 ----------------   x

                       x = (20 x 12) / 44

                       x = 5.45 g of C

                     # of moles = n = 5.45 / 12 = 0.454 mol of C

H2O

     MW = 18 g

                       18 g H2O ------------------- 2g of H

                       5.46 g    --------------------   x

                       x = (5.46 x 2) / 18 = 0.61 g of H

                       n = 0.61 / 1 = 0.61 moles of H2

Mass of O2

              mass CxHyOz = mass CO2 + mass H2 + mass O2

              mass O2 = 8.5 - 5.45 - 0.61

              mass O2 = 2.44g

              n = 2.44 / 16 = 0.153 mol of O2

Now, divide by the lowest number of moles

0.454 mol of C/ 0.153 = 2.97 ≈ 3

0.61 moles of H2/ 0.153 = 3.99 ≈ 4

0.153 mol of O2/ 0.153 =  1

Then, the empirical formula is: C₃H₄O

Gasoline contains only hydrogen and carbon atoms, yet nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide are produced when gasoline burns. What
White raven [17]

Answer:

The answer to the question is

The source of the nitro- gen and oxygen atoms is from the atmosphere

Explanation:

When gasoline burns oxygen from the atmosphere supports the combustion reaction.

For example the internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle pulls in air from the surrounding atmosphere to make use of the oxygen in aiding the combustion of the gasoline to drive the pistons that ultimately moves the vehicle. The air from which the oxygen is absorbed also contains more amount of Nitrogen by percentage than oxygen. The nitrogen therefore enters into the combustion reaction that eventually produces nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide

What type of solid has the highest melting point?
dem82 [27]

Answer: B -Network solids

Ionic solids are held by positive and negative charged ions bonded by electrostatic forces. The electrostatic force is much stronger than dipole–dipole interactions, London dispersion forces, hydrogen bonding.

Molecular solids are held by dipole–dipole interactions, London dispersion forces, or hydrogen bonds. Benzene is an example of this. These inter-molecular force are much weaker than electrostatic force.

The metallic bonds are much weaker than electrostatic force. Similarly, in non-metallic solids the atoms are held by covalent bonds. These covalent bonds are weaker than the electrostatic force.

Thus we can conclude that electrostatic force is the strongest when compared to  dipole–dipole interactions, London dispersion forces, hydrogen bonding,covalent and metallic bonds. Thus ionic solids will have the highest melting point as more energy is required to break the ionic bonds as this is the strongest bond compared to the other bonds.

Explain the difference between fixed and variable oxidation
dem82 [27]

Fixed vs Variable Oxidation is given below.

Explanation:

1.In its compounds, hydrogen has an oxidation number of +1, except. hydrides where the. oxidation number of hydrogen is -1. In their compounds, the metals with fixed oxidation states have the oxidation number that. corresponds with the fixed oxidation number.

A variable oxidation state is a value that determines the charge of the atom depending on certain conditions.

2. Oxidation state of elements is considered to be of the most important in the study of chemistry. For some elements, this figure is constant known as fixed oxidation , while for others it is variable is called variable oxidation state.

3. MgCl2 :  magnesium is in Group IIA and all elements in Group IIA have fixed oxidation numbers of +2

FeCl2 :  iron has a variable oxidation number of either +2 or +3 and is not fixed
